The WEC, owned by Zuffa, the same company as the UFC will be paring down their weight classes to four, and will no longer have middleweight 185 lbs, and light heavyweight 205 lbs fights on their events. With the bulk of the talent in those division currently competing in the UFC, the WEC fighters in the aforementioned divisions may find its way into the UFC. While the move had been rumored for months, it became official today via the WEC website.
The WEC will continue to service the 135 lbs., 145 lbs., 155 lbs., and 170 lbs., weight classes for a total of four weight classes, a drop from six, which was one more than the UFC! In fact, the WEC had more divisions and far less shows than their sister company, so the move appears to be a strong one and should actually bolster the product with more inter-divisional bouts building clear-cut competitors within the promotion. The UFC currently has five weight classes, a 155 lbs., 170 lbs., 185 lbs., 205 lbs., and 265 lbs. division.
