The UFC officially announces some of the undercard bouts that will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, Nevada on the undercard of UFC 94 St. Pierre vs. Penn 2. A match that was scratched from a previous UFC due to an injury suffered by Thiago Silva is on again as he takes on the perennial counterpuncher Lyoto Machida.
Lyoto Machida sports a 5-0 UFC record while Silva is on a 4-0 run in the UFC. It makes sense that they will face off against each other and with both fighters sporting identical 13-0 UFC records , it is expected that the next UFC light-heavyweight contender will be crowned following this fight.
It was rumored that Machida could have had another opponent step in to fight him after Silva dropped out of their previous bout but held out to fight a contender and his wish will come true on Jan 31st.
In other light heavyweight action, TUF 1 runner up Stephan Bonnar returns against the relatively unknown Jon Bones Jones. Jones will make his way to the Octagon for the second time following a unanimous decision victory over Andre Gusmao at UFC 87. The 21-year-old JUCO National Wrestling Champion will be the third opponent for Stephan Bonnar following his steroid suspension in 2006.
Bonnar is on a two-fight winning streak following convincing victories over Nike Nickels and Eric Schafer.
The official UFC 94 card is as follows
Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn
Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva
Stephan Bonnar vs. Eric Schafer
