 LAS VEGAS
(May 23, 2008) If crowd reaction is any indication, it appears the lightweight
division has truly arrived and is ready to take on a more prominent role in the UFC. On a card featuring Tito Ortiz, and Wanderlei Silva, the LW main event of UFC 84 was treated with an equally loud ovation.
The crowd
was firmly behind current lightweight champion BJ Penn and cheered wildly for the Hawaiian who told Joe Rogan, I am going to give everything
I got, and that is all I can do, Im ready. On the other hand former
champion Sean Sherk didnt fare quite as well with those in attendance. Forced
to speak over a chorus of boos that greeted him as he was interviewed, he said I
trained my ass for this man, BJ trained his ass off, you guys are in for a hell
of a night.
Both Penn
and Sherk weighed in at the 155 lbs. limit land are set for what could be the most
anticipated 155 lbs. matchup in the history of the UFC, but theirs was not the
only bad blood going around
To no ones
surprise Tito Ortiz was there to fan the flames of discontent, taking off his
jacket to reveal a shirt that read Dana is my Bitch. The shirt, in reference
to the well publicized animosity between Ortiz and UFC president White, was
received with laughter from the crowd but White was nowhere to be found, while
the smirking Ortiz brazenly showed off the shirt to anyone who would look.
UFC
newcomer Goran Reljic didnt show any of the jitters that many UFC newbies seem
to feel as he brazenly pushed his forehead right up to that of Wilson Gouveia
and nudged him before being separated by others on stage. UFC 84 Ill Will takes
place at the MGM Grand on May 24 and is sold out
