Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Hughes
First round sees GSP throw some kicks
but nothing really lands. Hughes is looking to take the fight to the
ground as soon as he can. He feigns some punches and shoots a couple
times but his takedown attempts arent event close. GSP eventually
takes Matt Hughes down and does so pretty easily. On the mat he
pushes Hughes's head against the cage and lands some punches. GSP is
controlling position adnd eventually passes the guard and goes to the
full mount. Matt Hughes is in big trouble and is getting punished by
GSP. The round is almost over and GSP goes for an armbar but the
round ends.
GSP takes Matt Hughes down again and it
is more of the same in round two. Matt Hughes cannot keep St. Pierre
in his guard and eventually has his guard passed. GSP is dominant I
dont think he has even taken a shot yet. GSP transitions to an armbar
and finishes with a cool armbar variation that forces Hughes to
verbally submit. GSP takes the interim belt but takes it off and
wants the rematch with Matt Serra
Wanderlei Silva vs. Chuck Liddell
The crowd in this building is on fire.
It is so loud in hear. Great first round both guys throwing this is a
great fight. This is the fight of the night and both guys are
throwing the leather. Liddell is hitting Vanderlei with hard shots
and Silva is still throwing. Silva's hands look sharp too and both of
them are hucking the leather. Close first round.
The second round see's Vanderlei clip
Chuck and knock him down. Chuck goes for the first takedown attempt
that I have ever seen him attempt and cleanly takes Silva down. Chuck
looks good in the ground and pound department. Silva started the
round strong but Chuck is looking better now. Both fighters have
landed significantl leather. Great fight.
Chuck Liddell is looking like he is
taking over the fight and is starting to find his range a little more
now. He has Silva on his heels against the cage but it looks like he
is out of breath. Both fighters are starting to show signs of fatigue
but both still continue to throw down. Chuck again gets another
takedown to seal the deal. Chuck Liddell wins by decision.

Soa Palelei vs. Eddie Sanchez
A slow first round saw had Palelei
start out with a takedown agains the cage but Sanchez was able to
ride it out and get right back to his feet. This fight is very slow
not much action but Palelei looks like he wants to take the fight to
the ground and Sanchez seems content on the feet. Sanchez seems to be
landing the more meaningful blows. Close round.
The second round is slow as well with
both fighters inactive in the clinch. As the round wore on it
appeared that Paleilei was losing steam and slowed down as Sanchez
somewhat methodically stalked him down. He is taking the fight over
but is not explosive by any means. Slow round MMARR gives the round
to Sanchez.
Palelei is really flat footed and
doesnt have anything left in the tank. He barely throws a punch the
whole round. Sanchez was busy putting combinations together and
backing up Palelei the end came late when he threw a flurry of
uppercuts to send the referee in to stop the fight. This fight is
probably the worst fight so far. Sanchez wins by TKO ref stoppage
round 3.
Lyoto Machida vs. Rameau Sokoudjou
An uneventful first round saw Sokoudjou
get a nice takedown but was reversed almost immediately with and
found himself on his back. From the halfguard Machida attempted a
Kimura for what seemed like several minutes but abandoned it. It went
to the feet again and Sokoudjou again was able to get the takedown.
The first round was fairly slow with neither fighter able to land the
telling blow.
The second round saw Machida go back to
his tentative counter attacking style but for the first time in his
career he was eventually able to finish his fight. It started with
landing a nice punch that put Sokoudjou on the mat he then pounced on
him landing elbows and punches and eventually sunk in the arm
triangle for the victory. Lyoto Machida wins at 4:20 or round 2 by
Arm triangle submission
Rich Clementi vs. Melvin Guillard
Rich Clementi was able to secure a rear
naked choke over Melvin Guillard in the first round. Both fighters
felt each other out with the stand up in the early goings and
Clementi eventually tied Guillard up with the double underhooks and
took it to the ground with a nice dump. From there he was able to get
the back and work on a rear naked choke. It didn't work out for him
the first time as Guillard was able to sneak out but he eventually
went to it again and this time he was able to take finish him with
the choke to induce the tapout. After the referee separated them he
stood over Guillard and taunted him by doing an X chop to his
groin and Guillard took exception to it and went after Clementi after
the bout was over. That would not be it as he went after Clementi
again while Joe Rogan interviewed Clementi post bout. Clementi over
Guillard 4:40 Rd 1 Rear Naked Choke
Preliminary Matches
Luiz Cane vs James Irvin
In a wierd finish to what was starting
out to be a great fight, James Irving and Luiz Cane came out swinging
and to the surprise of many Cane was getting the better of the early
exchanges. But like Irvin has done many times before he took some and
gave some back landing a solid punch on Cane that backed him up. From
here the fight got confusing. Cane got a big takedown on irving who
had a hold of Cane's head and when Cane stood up he hit Irvin with a
knee to the face while he was still on the ground. The referee
immediately stepped in to separate the fighters and give irvin a
chance to recover but Irvin stayed on the ground and attempted to
get back up but fell down again. The shot didnt look that hard but
Irvan was unable to continue. The referee came out and raised Cane's
hand declaring him the winner but it was changed to Irvin winning by
disqualification at 1:51 of the first round.
Nate Mohr vs. Manny Gamburyan
In a quick fight Manny Gamburyan took
Mohr to the ground, worked on the ground and pound for a moment and
fell back for the ankle lock. Mohr fought it off f or a few moments
but screamed and tapped out to give The Anvil the win at 1:31
by ankle lock. Mohr looked like he was seriously hurt and had to be
helped back to the dressing room and Gamburyan apologized for hurting
his opponent, I pulled it, I jerked it I am so sorry man. It
was an impressive victory for Gamburyan who got the victory.
Jordan Radev vs. Dean Lister
The first round started slowly and Dean
Lister shot in for a weak takedown attempt that Radev easily evaded.
It was clear that Radev was looking to keep the fight standing and
work the stand up game and Lister was looking to take the fight to
the mat. Lister fired off some kicks but and landed one head kick
althought there doesnt seemt o be a lot behind it. Most of his kicks
are weak and Radev is getting the better of the exchange of hands.
MMARR scored the first round for Radev.
In the second Lister attempted a number
of futile takedown attempts that Radev easily stopped again and both
fighters looked tentative on the feet. It was becoming abundantly
clear that Lister was going to need a takedown if he was going to win
this fight and and it came later in the second and Lister fell right
to the mount position. From there he was aggressive landing a number
of very stiff elbows but the round ended before Lister was able to
finish the fight.
The third was again a slow affair on
the feet but late in the third Lister was able to get another
takedown and went to work from there trying to pass guard and working
a little bit of ground and pound but again the round ended with him
on top. MMARR gave the second round to Lister and the Judges called
the fight 30-27 3 times over for a unanimous decision for Dean Lister
after three rounds.
Roan Carneiro vs. Tony Desouza
The first round is a tactical one with
Carneiro starting off with a takedown off a clinch to start the
fight. Off his back Desouza worked for an armbar but lost it and
Carneiro took his back. From there Carneiro worked for a rear naked
choke but despite some time on his back was unable to secure it.
Desouza eventually escaped via a slick reversal and worked some solid
ground and pound in a very close round.
In the second stanza Carneiro was able
to work his way to Desouza's back after a takedown and this time
instead of working for a rear naked choke he pinned him to the mat
and punshed the side of Desouza's head until the referee was forced
to step in and stop the bout at 3:33 of round 2.
Mark Bocek vs. Doug Evans
In the first round Doug Evans looked
good scoring with combinations and catching Mark Bocek coming in for
the clinch and countering Boceks punches and landing solidly. He was
able to defend the takedowns well in the early goings but Bocek was
eventually able to wrestle him to the mat. From there he was not able
to mount too much offense but stayed busy enough for the referee to
let them stay there. MMARR had the first round for Doug Evans.
In the second round Boceks takedwowns
came easier and he was able to regularly secure takedowns The ground
and pound came steadily in this round and Bocek was able to take the
round on the strength of several takedowns and steady ground and
pound offense that never put Evans in any trouble but did enough to
give him the round. MMARR gave the second round to Bocek..
The third was more of the same as Bocek
was able to assert his wrestling skills and as the fight wore on
Evans takedown defense seemed less and less effective. Bocek won most
of the final stanza but in the closing seconds of the round Evans
worked a Kimura on Bocek's left arm and reversed him but the bell
sounded to end the final round. Too little too late for Evans and the
judges gave the decision three times 29-28 for Mark Bocek.
