Live UFC Fight for the troops report
Josh Koscheck (11-3) vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (10-2)
Josh Koscheck finished the night off with his patented
looping right hand, viciously knocking out judo black-belt Yoshiyuki
Yoshida, and punctuating UFC Fight for the Troops in front of 10,000
troops at Fort Bragg. What an honor to fight in front of all you guys
out there, said Koscheck following one of the more devastating UFC
knockouts in recent memory. Yoshida, who never saw the punch coming,
took a straight right that stunned him before the end came at 2:15 of
the first round.
Jonathan Goulet (22-10) vs. Mike Swick (13-2)
In a grudge match that was set to take place September
of last year, Mike Swick finished off Jonathan Goulet early in the
first round showing off the trademark explosiveness that Mike "Quick"
Swick was once known for. Swick fired off a left-right combo that
buckled Goulets legs and while Goulet tried to tie up a leg, Swick
fired off a salvo of punches on a prone Goulet who was unable to defend
himself. Goulet lay twitching on the mat after the referee stepped in
to stop the bout at 33 seconds of the first round.
It was an impressive victory for Swick who showed off
some of his trademark explosiveness coming off surgery and appears to
be healthy and ready to make a run at the welterweight division where
he is now 3-0, it is also a division where two of his teammates, Jon
Fitch and Josh Koscheck also reside, it will be interesting to see how
the situation plays itself out.
Steve Cantwell (7-1) vs. Razak Al Hassan (6-1)
Steve Cantwell was impressive in his UFC debut dominating Razak Al
Hassan on the ground and finishing with a submission that bent Hassans
arm at a grotesque angle until Mario Yamasaki stepped in to stop the
fight without a tapout from Hassan.
In the early goings, Cantwell was forced to find his range through the
rather rigid and lanky stand-up assault of Al Hassan, and when he took
the fight to the ground, it didnt take long for him to find himself in
the dominant position. From there the former WEC light-heavyweight
champion moved to the mount, and finished with an armbar that finished
the overmatched Al Hassan. Cantwell moves his record to 7-1 while Al
Hassan goes back to the drawing board as his record falls to 6-1.
Tim Credeur (11-2) vs. Nate Loughran (9-1)
TUF veteran Tim Credeur, known more for his jiu-jitsu black belt
than his hands, stood up with Nate Louhgran for bulk of their bout en
route to a dominant second round victory over Nate Laughran who didn't
answer the bell for round 3. Credeurs standup, while not technically
sound, was effective enough to force Loughlin into eathing punches he
had no answer for.
Loughran went for a takedown to start the second stanza but was
rebutted and ended up on his back in no better position than he was
while he stood on his feet. After the fight was restarted, he was
beaten to the punch until the end of the second round, which proved to
be the remainder of the bout. I got to be a well rounded fighter,
said Credeur after the bout, and while he has a ways to go to stand
with the better strikers in the 185 lbs. division, his improvement in
the department has been noted in an impressive victory over an
overmatched opponent.
Matt Wiman (10-4) vs. Jim Miller (13-1) Referee Mario Yamasaki
Coming off a honeymoon in Aruba, Jim Millers conditioning was a
question mark going into a short-notice appearance against Matt Wiman
who had been training for months Despite this, he came out firing,
dominating the early part of the fight working steady and accurate
punches coupled with a stronger wrestling base to keep Wiman off
balance througout the bout.
It wasn't long into the bout when he sunk in a guillotine that
appeared to be the end for Wiman, who looked close to tapping out.
Wiman held onto his opponents shorts, despite repeated warnings from
the referee, and eventually jimmied his head free but found himself on
the wrong end of a steady ground and pound attack shortly afterwards.
Wiman, bleeding and flushed, was looking like the fighter who was
coming in on short notice as Miller dominated the bout.
Wiman let his hands go as the bell sounded in to begin the third
round and had his best offense of the bout in back-and-forth exchange,
but it didnt take long for Miller to regain control of the bout
grounding Wiman and settling back into a steadfast ground-and-pound
attack. As commentator Mike Goldberg mentioned on the broadcast, Wiman
was on the defensive the whole fight and lost all three rounds dropping
his record to 10-4 and having his four-fight UFC winning streak come to
a halt in the process.
Preliminary Bouts
Ben Saunders vs. Brandon Wolff
In one of the most lopsided beatdowns in recent UFC memory, Ben
Saunders drove dozens of his knees into the face of his opponent
Brandon Wolff until the referee stepped in to stop the fight about ten
knees too late. Wolff had no answer for the clinch that marked the
beginning of the end for the highly touted Hawaiian fighter, and he
paid for it with a lump on his forehead that looked like a softball was
growing out of his head.
History may have event been made as appeared like the most consecutive
knees thrown, and landed, on an opponents face ever in a UFC bout.
With the exception of a few body kicks and an errant low kick, it was
the only strikes he threw during one minute and forty nine seconds of
straight offense for the former Ultimate Fighter veteran. Saunders was
impressive in his third consecutive UFC win and makes his way into the
looping UFC highlight reel packages in the process of finishing the
bout at 1:49 of the first stanza.
Steve Bruno vs. Johnny Rees
Military veteran Steve Bruno finished Johnny Rees with a rear-naked choke at 3:44 of the second round in a preliminary welterweight bout that saw him fight in front of 10,000 troops at Fort Bragg. Bruno was able to control the ground game - and despite getting in a
little bit of trouble standing up - was able to secure the takedown
when he needed to keep him out of danger.
Following a move to the mat Bruno transitioned his way onto Rees' back
for the third or forth time in the fight, and this time he finished with
a rear-naked choke that started standing, and ended up on the mat
with Rees tapping out. This is by far the most important day of my life, he said following his victory. I am glad I could do it in front of my military brothers and sisters.
