UFC 91 Couture vs. Lesnar quick picks

Main Card

Randy Couture over Brock Lesnar
First things first, when it comes down to it, if you look at the records, Lesnar doesn’t deserve a title shot at Randy Couture. He just doesn’t, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or a family member of a UFC employee. While I am one of a few people who think that Lesnar has the physical and mental tools to be a top MMA fighter, I am going with the veteran Randy Couture. I think the championship rounds, rounds four and five will prove to be too much for the heavy frame of Lesnar and Couture will bide his time until then.

Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson

This is a great fight. Florian is just one of those guys that has proven that the TUF fighters are no joke. I saw his fight with Alex Karalexis live and I was not impressed with him despite his win, but I am impressed with him now. Despite this, I think the wrestling goes to Stevenson, and it could prove to be the deciding factor. I think it will be a competitive fight, but Daddy might be able to hold him on the ground and get a positional victory via decision.

Gabriel Gonzaga over Josh Hendricks submission Rd 2
Gonzaga had had an up-and-down career in the UFC but I think it is back on the upswing right now.  UFC first timers sometimesget the UFC jitters and that may be the case this time with Hendricks. Gonzaga’s Jiu Jitsu is out of Hendricks league, and unless Hendricks knocks him out in an early exchange stamina and ground skills will take Gonzaga back on the winning track.

Demian Maia over Nate Quarry submission Rd 2
Grappler vs. Striker, the formula is tried and true in the UFC and this time I think the ground skills will prove to be the deciding factor. Maia’s jiu jitsu is on a different level and with some UFC experience under his belt, I feel he will overwhelm Quarry on the ground when it gets there. Maia might have a little trouble taking it to the ground in the early goings, but it will only take one time for him to finish once it gets there like most fights do.

Aaron Riley over Jorge Gurgel decision
New UFC fans may not know a lot about Riley but he has proven to be one of the most entertaining fighters in MMA. While his legendary chin has taken its knocks over the years, his experience and entertainment value always make him a fun watch. I have never been impressed with Gurgel’s MMA fights, his tendency to strike when his boxing is clearly not his strength will hurt him in this fight. I think that Riley will take a decision in a hard fought and entertaining affair.

Preliminary Quick Picks

Dustin Hazelett over Tamdan McCrory submission Rd 2
Rafael dos Anjos over  Jeremy Stephens via Submission
Mark Bocek over Alvin Robinson decision
Ryan Thomas over Matt Brown TKO rd 2
