 After a string of steroid suspensions in the world of MMA the UFC anounces another. The middleweight Ultimate fighter contestant Chris Leben tested possitive for stanozolol after his UFC 89 loss to Michael Bisping. Another blow to Lebens career.
Dana White had this to say, “I
am obviously disappointed with Chris, who has made great strides
getting his life back on track,” said UFC President Dana White. “To his
credit, he has taken responsibility for his actions and is accepting
the punishment that has been handed down. But as always, the UFC puts
the safety of its athletes first and foremost, and we won’t tolerate
anyone using performance enhancing drugs in our organization.”
On a personal note I wasn't a Leben fan after the Ultimate Fighter but
his last two performances made me one. It is a shame this is now a
blemish on his already shaky career. Steroids are a part of pro sports
ever since they were invented and I hope they hand out stronger
punishments in MMA than 9 months. Some fighters don't even fight for 6
months at a time after an injury or other issue. The recent movie
release Bigger Stronger Faster*
was in my opinion a solid look at steroid abuse from both sides. It
isn't MMA specific but this movie helped me to put the issue into
perspective.
I love fighting sports because they are in my opinion the purest of
all sports. Man vs Man. When you enter the ring the only thing
separating winning from losing should be your skill and determination.
Did you train more, harder, smarter? Do you have that fire inside you
to win? Crooked judges decisions and steroid abuse is what made me give
up on boxing as a sport, MMA needs to somehow be better. We need
harsher penalties!

Following a three month dry spell in which no mixed martial artists
were tested under the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s new
out-of-competition drug testing process, there have been a number of
athletes from the upcoming UFC 91 fight card tested recently. Mark Bocek and Alvin Robinson are the latest fighters to be
scrutinized under the state’s out-of-competition testing process. Both
fighters returned negative test results. Bocek and Robinson – who face each other on Nov. 15 – bring to eight
the number of fighters tested from the UFC 91 fight card. Never before
has the commission pre-tested that number of athletes from one fight
card, whether it be for mixed martial arts or boxing. The other six UFC 91
fighters that have already been tested include main eventers Randy
Couture and Brock Lesnar, as well as Nick Catone, Amir Sadollah, Aaron
Riley, and Jorge Gurgel. All of them also tested negative. |
