BJ Penn to fight Joe Stevenson for interim lightweight title.

ImageWhile Sean Sherk sits in the sidelines waiting on news from the California state athletic commission an interim title will be on the line as BJ Penn faces Joe Stevenson in a lightweight contest. B.J Penn will be fighting for the Lightweight title for the third time, missing out the first time in a loss to Jens Pulver and the second time drawing with Kauru Uno. He will be facing the winner of the Ultimate Fighter 2 Joe Stevenson who has steadily been climbing the UFC ranks since becoming a lightweight in the UFC.

ImageIt is official. Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell will face off against "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva on December 29, 2007. It is a long awaited match up that has been rumored to happen again, and again, over the years but the UFC has made it official. Both fighters are coming off two consecutive losses but despite their recent slides both are still marquee names in the sport.

ImageBrock Lesnar is now a UFC fighter. For years the UFC was rumored to be trying to bring in pro wrestlers like olympic gold medalist, Kurt Angle, celebrities like Wesley Snipes and Joe Rogan, and boxers like Mike Moorer. UFC officially announced that former WWE star Brock Lesnar would join the UFC heavyweight division.

Image"The Spider" Anderson Silva defeated Rich Franklin again in impressive fashion stopping the former UFC middleweight champion in the second stanza of their championship bout. In other action Tim Sylvia outpointed Brandon Vera to step back into the title picture, Yushin Okami defeated Jason MacDonald in a decision, and Stephan Bonner defeated Eric Schafer.

MacDonald, who represents Pro Camp Sports Management, squares off against Japan’s Yushin Okami in a bout that could very well determine who the next top contender for the UFC middleweight crown will be. On the same card, UFC 77: Hostile Territory, middleweight champion Anderson Silva defends his belt in a rematch against former title-holder Rich Franklin. The winner of the MacDonald-Okami encounter will be at the head of the line to face the champion.

ImageIt has to be one of the most shocking events in recent MMA memory, “The Natural” Randy Couture has decided to end his current relationship with the UFC. According to a report by Josh Gross of Sherdog.com he faxed in his resignation to Dana White. It has been a roller coaster turn for Couture who retired after a loss to Chuck Liddell and returned to defeat Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga taking the heavyweight championship in the process. It appears that Fedor Emelianenko’s apparent signing with another organization outside the UFC was a factor in the decision. Couture’s fight purse was apparently also a factor in the decision.

Kazuhiro Nakamura tests positive for Marijuana

ImagePride veteran and UFC newcomer Kazuhiro Nakamura has tested positive for Marijuana. Nakamura is coming off a loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 76 in Anaheim, California on September 22. He has been fined $500 and suspended until December 21 for his actions by the California State Athletic Commission.

Nakamura was the only fighter of the 18 that were tested, that tested positive for the drugs of abuse. The results from the tests for performance enhancing drugs have not yet been revealed. This is his second appearance on U.S. soil.

ImageThe war of words that took place on the internet between Jonathan Goulet and Mike Swick will have to wait to come to a head. According to the UFC website Swick injured his rib and will be unable to fight Goulet on the Ultimate FIght Night that was set to take place on Sept 19th. Dustin Hazelett will step in on short notice to take on the Canadian.
