 The main-event was an emotionally charged, grudge match between TKO World Lightweight Champion, Sam Stout and the TKO #1 Challenger, Jay Estrada. Estrada successfully took Stout to the ground almost before UFC veteran referee, Steve Mazzagatti, could get the words “bring it on!”, out of his mouth. But, Stout defended well and remained unphased as his game plan was to utilize his superior conditioning and end the fight in the later rounds. Round two witnessed some good standing exchanges with Stout getting the better of it. However, once again, it didn’t take Estrada long before he caught a low leg kick and took the fight to the mat. But, this is where Stout’s training with three-time all American wrestler, Gray Maynard, began to pay dividends. Stout swept Estrada, took the mount position and began delivering vicious ground and pound. Estrada gave up an arm trying to defend the assault and Stout intelligently capitalized by securing the fight-ending armbar at 1:21 of round two to retain his Championship! Mark Hominick thought he was fighting Ivan Menjivar up until one week before this fight. Thankfully for Mark and the TKO fans, Samuel Guillet once again showed his tremendous fighting spirit and courage by accepting the fight on last minute’s notice. Guillet certainly proved he was no push over as he managed to take Hominick down and work some effective ground and pound in the first two rounds. However, by round three, Hominick’s constant peppering and thunderous low kicks began to really take its tool on a beaten down Guillet. At one point, Guillet actually crumpled to the ground after receiving an umpteenth low-kick, all of which could be heard throughout the Bell Centre as if it were a hockey puck ringing off the goal post! Hominick got the well deserved unanimous decision and at the post-fight press conference, he spoke emphatically about his intentions to revenge Hatsu Hioki for the TKO World Featherweight Championship! TKO Canadian Heavyweight Champion and UFC veteran, Icho Larenas returned to unify his title against the “new and improved”, Krzysztof Soszynski. Training with world-class striking coaches, Shawn Tompkins and Bas Rutten, is certainly paying off for Soszynski as he landed devastating punches and kicks for which Larenas had almost no answer to. Larenas took the fight to the ground at the end of round one where he seemed to hold the advantage. But, Soszynski survived, continued to dominate the standup exchanges and never appeared to be in any real danger throughout the course of the fight. In Soszynki’s corner, Shawn Tompkins continued to yell words of encouragement by saying, “You’re this close Krystoff! You’re this close!” As round three began, Larenas’ eyes were swelling shut and the blood from cuts on his forehead was severely impairing his vision. Despite Larenas’ unrelenting will to continue, the doctor called a halt to the contest and an overjoyed Soszynski was proclaimed the new TKO World Heavyweight Champion! The highly touted, Light Heavyweight prospect, Martin Desilets put his undefeated record on the line against Todd Gouwenberg, who was dropping down from Heavyweight for the first time in his professional career. The fight began predictably with both fighters swinging for the rafters! Both men also utilized a lot of dirty-boxing techniques as they threw repeated hooks and uppercuts from within the clinch. Desilet attempted a kimura as round one drew to a close but, Gouwenberg seemed to have an answer for everything Desilet offered. The tremendous punishment sustained by both fighters took its toll as the fight progressed and their faces reflected the fact that they were in a war! Ultimately, Gouwenberg proved to be the better puncher, the stronger grappler and the superior conditioned athlete on this night as he earned the unanimous decision victory in a highly entertaining fight! Stephane Dube versus James Martinez was a match-up between two of the most exciting Lightweight strikers in the sport! Unfortunately, the fight didn’t last very long as Martinez caught a toe in the eye from a Dube high-kick. Dube pounced on Martinez without hesitation as the action continued and the referee was forced to call a halt to the bout at 1:16 of round one. A very respectful and classy Dube was quick to offer Martinez an immediate rematch in his post-fight speech. The resurgent Tyler Jackson earned his first and very impressive victory in TKO by making quick work of former Lightweight Champion, Donald Ouimet. Jackson came out ultra-aggressive with powerful and technical strikes. Ouimet took the fight to the ground but soon found himself caught in an armbar. Ouimet shriek in agony as Jackson dislocated his elbow, ending the contest after only 37. Fans will now wait to see what’s next for Tyler Jackson in TKO’s already stacked Lightweight Division! Chris Clements continued to impress as he used his explosive ground and pound to stop newcomer Steve Pouliot at 3:16 of round one. Clements has quickly climbed the TKO Welterweight ladder and hopes a well deserved title shot is in his future. Steve Claveau showed why Team Legion’s submission skills are highly revered as he put the always tough, John Fraser, to sleep by triangle choke at 3:17 of round one. The young, David Pariseau once again proved why many think he could develop into one of Canada’s best Lightweights as he stopped a very game, Jacob McDonald with a keylock at 2:42 of round two. Daniel Boisonneault won the battle of newcomers as he defeated Yves Lemelin by TKO at 2:16 of round one. Roy Doepker improved his unblemished professional record to 3-0 as he stopped David Fraser with a rear-naked choke at 4:57 of round one. |
