Rob "Maximus" MacDonald will be making his second UFC appearance against fellow "Ultimate Fighter" veteran Keith Rotharmel. MacDonald is a police officer in Toronto, Canada and talked about how his job affects his fighting career, his loss to Jason Lambert in his UFC debut, training with Team Tompkins ...
What Happened in your first fight against Jason Lambert? Well obviously I lost. I got caught in a submission end of story. It could happen to anybody. I could sit here and try to make excuses and say I was nervous for my UFC debut and that the 35 pound weight drop affected me but the plain truth is I just got caught by a very good opponent. It can happen to anybody on any given day. What is it like fighting a member of "The Ultimate Fighter" like yourself? I think it is great. I really believe all the guys on TUF share some kind of common ground or bond. Listen, being on a reality television show is different from anything you could ever imagaine. It is such a unique situation I couldnt even begin to explain it to you. I think that in some ways it was the best experience of my life, and in some ways it was the hardest experience of my life. I think all the guys on the TUF series have a sense of mutual respect for each other but in that I think there is also a rivalry between the seasons. What I do is I have the utmost respect for anyone who is on season three. You have to be a great fighter to even be picked. What are your thoughts regarding your opponent Keith Rotharmel? To tell you the truth I dont know much about him. I mean I saw him on The Ultimate Fighter 3 but its hard to judge someone based on that. From what I have heard he is a very skilled fighter and has a stong ground game. I look forward to fighing him. It really doesnt matter to me who I fight. Shawn has always taught us to be in the best shape we could and be prepared to fight anyone at anytime. My main goal right now is to go out there, fight like I know I can, and put on a great show. What I do is I have the utmost respect for anyone who is on season three. You have to be a great fighter to even be picked. Your thoughts on getting a second chance in the UFC ? I think I am very lucky. We all know in the fight game that you are only as good as your last fight. You can be the best in the world on one day and be regarded as washed up the next. I plan to make the most of this opportunity and have really begun to take my training to the next level. How is your training affected by being a police officer in Toronto? I think I have really got my training on track. Being a police officer in Toronto isnt easy. I have had to make alot of sacrifices in my personal life to be able to train fulltime and I am lucky my family at TPS are so supportive. They are the best police service in the world and I am grateful that they are behind me. Living away from london has been tough. I miss training with Shawn, Mark and Sam everyday. Because of my career though it is impossible. I still go to Shawns as much as humanly possible. Team tompkins is my heart and soul. Shawn is my best friend, brother and the person I admire most in the fight world. Everything I have is because of his hard work and patience. He has always been my biggest supporter and will always be in my corner. I have also been extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to train with Shah Franco in Toronto. The man has opened his school to me and has really welcomed me as a member of his family. He has gone out of his way to help me get better as a fighter. Words cant express how appreciative I am. All of the guys there have been amazing to me. Antonio, Richie, Marco, Matt, Steve, Joe, Warren, Brendan, Jeff, Ashley, they have all really helped me improve my ground game. They are all great people too. MY goal is too continually work with Shah on my ground game and hopefully through alot of hard work earn my black belt one day. I am so lucky to get to train in both places. In the fight game there are alot of petty rivalries and jealousies. Not so with Shawn and Shah. These two men are the epitome of the word "proffessional". Genuinly they care about making people into better fighters and athletes and dedicate their lives to make it happen. These are two of the best schools in the world as far as Im concerned. Look at the fighters that come from both camps. Hominck, Stout, Rondinelli, Nancoo, Carvhalo. I am really lucky to get to train with these world class athletes and trainers. Anyone you would like to thank ? I would like to thank all the guys at Team Tompkins and Shah Francos for their hard work and dedication. I couldnt do any of this without you. My family and friends who have always been supportive of me through everything and have shaped me into what I am today. I would like to thank my girl April, she is the most supportive and caring person you can imagine. She is an absolute God send and means the world to me. I would also like to thank The toronto police service and all the people at work who are behind me 100%. Thank you to you too Arnold. Great talking to you.
