MMARR's Brett Atchley was able to catch up with Chael Sonnon on the day before his fight with Jeremy Horn, to ask him briefly what he had in mind in this bout, training, and what his goals are. Sonnen is a very personable individual, the kind of guy that makes you to feel like you have his undivided attention when you are talking with him.
MMARR was able to catch up with Chael Sonnon on the day before his fight with Jeremy Horn, to ask him briefly what he had in mind in this bout, training, and what his goals are. Sonnen is a very personable individual, the kind of guy that makes you to feel like you have his undivided attention when you are talking with him. He is a busy man as well, and aside from the hobby he has taken up with MMA, he is also a hugely successful real estate agent with John L. Scott, he heads his own MMA production ( the FCFF a very popular amateur show in Portland ) and he has just recently finished a small role on the television show Law and Order: Criminal Intent. MMARR: What adjustments have you had to make in this fight with Jeremy Horn? CS: I really havent made any, Im just going to go in there and do what I did to him for seven and a half minutes in the last fight. I punished him. Basically beat the hell out of him. MMARR: What happened, I mean we all know what happened literally but what have done this time that will prohibit that from happening again? CS: Well, I was lacking in conditioning and I basically just ran out of gas. I could continue that level of pressure and force in the fight. He was basically in better shape than I was and I got caught. MMARR: Its been said in the past that you havent been one to engage real consistent in your MMA training and conditioning. CS: Well you know, I was an Olympic caliber wrestler at one time, so I know what it is to put in the time on the matt and with your team. I would say in the past that it was not so much on the fore front of my mind. I thin k now for me, I have one thing that I want to accomplish. I know what it takes to succeed in that vision. MMARR: What is that vision Chael? CS: I want to be a UFC Champion. Its not for the fame, fortune, or signing autographs and its not for the money. Its just something that I want to achieve. Its all I want and after that its done for me. Ive said this before this a hobby for me, not a lifelong dream that I live, breath and dream about. MMARR: What is your contract with Zuffa right now as far as fights? CS: I just signed a three fight contract with them last week so I think the opportunity is clear and present. Im getting the guidance and direction I need at Team Quest. Robert Follis is the best guy I could have in my corner and Matt Lindland is the one who pushes me past my technical limits. I am still learning. The rest of the guys at Team Quest are putting me through the drill, its a great environment for me. MMARR: What goes through your mind when you think about getting into the cage with Jeremy Horn? CS: I really am selfish about that. I think more of myself and not so much about him. I mean its more about what I am going to do. I think about him and our previous encounters but, I see it more in the way that I couldve won those fights. As far as Jeremy as a person, hes the guy across from me when I go out to do a job and Im going to try to tear his head off. I am pleased that it is Jeremy Horns name that this is all about. It is a very good thing for me. I will be able to be present and accounted for in the entire 15 minutes of that fight, if that is what it takes. MMARR: Thanks a lot for talking to me Chael and my confidence is with you, good luck!. CS: Thank you for thinking of me. Anytime, at all.
