Canadian MMA champion Georges Rush St. Pierre made his ADCC debut this weekend at The Pyramid in Long Beach , California . St. Pierre accepted his invitation to compete in the event on short notice. In his first match, St. Pierre went the distance against former University of Michigan wrestler Otto Olson. After some great exchanges of power and technique the Canadian looked tired, but he would find enough strength in his body to come out victorious on points. In his next match against Leo Santos, a Nova Uniao Jiu-Jitsu black belt, St. Pierre was forced to tap after getting caught in an armbar. Despite an early exit from the tournament St. Pierre impressed many with his competitiveness in the ADCC. The respectful UFC contender took some time after his first match against Otto Olson to share his thoughts on his first appearance in the ADCC with MMA Ring Report. MMA Ring Report: Were here with Georges St. Pierre who just defeated Otto Olson on points in the Abu Dhabi World Submission Wrestling Championships in the 66-75 kilogram division. Georges is this your first time in the Abu Dhabi ? Georges St. Pierre : Its the first time Ive been in the Abu Dhabi . Its a good experience for me. For me, Im looking forward to improving my ground here and improving my experience in grappling. MMA Ring Report: You didnt have too much time to train for this event, but how did your training go? Georges St. Pierre : You know, I knew I was coming here on short notice. I didnt have a lot of time to train for it. I trained for my next Vale Tudo fight, my next MMA fight, against Frank Trigg, August 6th. Im always in good shape. Im never off-season. So I came here to have fun, a little bit, you know. MMA Ring Report: So how was your conditioning in that first match? Georges St. Pierre : The first match, it was very tough because the guy, he was a good wrestler. We used a lot of strength against each other. But I think the first match is always the hardest, because it makes you warm, you know, but now Im ready for the second one. MMA Ring Report: Were you anxious to get in there? How did you feel? Georges St. Pierre : No, Im very comfortable, you know, I just try to go there and have fun. Win or lose, I dont care. Its a good experience for me; of course Im here to win. I do my best and I will be happy no matter the result. MMA Ring Report: So you will be fighting Frank Trigg, did you see his match against Dennis Hallman today? Georges St. Pierre : Yes, he got caught with an ankle lock. MMA Ring Report: Yes, a heel hook. Georges St. Pierre : Yeah, exactly. MMA Ring Report: Was there anything in that match that you think you can capitalize on when you face him, or is it a different game? Georges St. Pierre : Yeah, its a totally different game. Abu Dhabi and the UFC, its a totally different game. You can be good in Abu Dhabi , in grappling, but you can be no good in Mixed Martial Arts. So it can give me a little idea of his takedown and what his ground looks like, but I dont look very much at it. MMA Ring Report: How do the rounds and the scoring here at Abu Dhabi compare to what you usually do and how you usually train? Georges St. Pierre : Its just ground, you know, there is no striking. I dont even know the rules by heart, to be honest with you. I just come here, you know. I know the takedown is two points. Passing the guard, I think is three points. You know, during the first five minutes, I try to work very quick, try to get a submission, but after the first five minutes the points count more, so I try to win by points, you know. MMA Ring Report: Thank you very much for your time, we appreciate it, and good luck to you in the UFC against Frank Trigg. Georges St. Pierre : Thank you. |
