Everett, Washington -- Although the heavyweight affair between Shane Del
Rosario and Lolohea Mahe was billed as the main event, all in attendance and
those watching on Showtime TV were cognizant that the women`s welterweight title
between champion Sarah Kaufman and challenger Roxanne Modafferi was the star
attraction on this edition of Strikeforce Challengers.
It was without question a contrast of styles between the vicious knock out
power of Kaufman, and the tactical ground skills of Modafferi. With two take
takedowns, and some solid clinch work Modafferi seemingly eked out round one.
The second stanza was all Kaufman as she landed a number of telling blows which
left Modafferi reeling as she tried to survive the stand up onslaught. Going
into the third is was anyone's fight and stayed that way until late in the
round. For a second time during the round Modafferi tried to pull guard to
avoid the fistic fury of Kaufman, but was unable to escape the gripping power
of the Victoria, BC native, who finished the fight with a devastating slam,
knocking Modafferi out. A dramatic and explosive finish for the undefeated
champion, Sarah Kaufman.
With the crowd still buzzing over the Kaufman victory, Shane Del Rosario had
little trouble in the main event as he made short work of relative unknown,
Lolohea Mahe. With an array of kicks, knees and left hands, Del Rosario, picked
his shots as he systematically dismantled Mahe. The final blows were a left
knee to the head followed by two knees to the mid-section which crumpled Mahe
leaving referee Anthony Hamlett little choice by to stop the one sided contest.
In other pro action, UFC cast off Mike Kyle looked impressive as he was able to
finish off Abongo Humphrey with a rear-naked choke in the second round. Bobby
Voelker and Cory Devela put on an entertaining back and forth battle for 15
minutes as Voelker squeaked out a razor close split decision. AMC Pankration
standout, Carlos Fodor, opened the televised portion of the card by defeating
Thomas Diagne via unanimous decision.
