These days in MMA you cant judge a show by its title. Words like chaos, inferno and rumble get tossed around like a baseball in a playground when sometimes in retrospect snooze-fest, snore-a-thon and stall-o-rama would be more appropriate choices. Thankfully, UFC 53 HEAVY HITTERS lives up to its name, dishing out plenty of five-knuckle bullets courtesy of certified skull-smashers like Andrei Arlovski, Rich Franklin, Paul Buentello, David Loiseau, Nick Diaz and Nate Quarry. Even fighters known primarily for their grappling skills get in the cage and let the bombs fly like its the second hour of that awful Pearl Harbor movie starring Ben Affleck. The result? Dudes get rocked like senior citizens at a Metallica concert, with five fights ending by KO or TKO.

Pride Fighting Championship, much like mixed martial arts as a whole, has evolved over the years, as rules have developed when needed such as the creation of a consistent round structure, a defined time limit, three yellow cards for disqualification, and standing restarts. A look at Pride 2, From the Yokohama Arena illustrates the practicality of such evolution.

In mixed martial arts history, a look at the early UFC proves how far the sport has come. No time limits, bare knuckles, legal head butting, and so much more made the sport seem so unrefined, the likes of Senator John McCain (Republican-Arizona) sought to shut down the promotion in the United States. The UFC eventually reemerged, but it didnt look the same as it did before. Knuckles were covered, and short guys could no longer take on huge sumo wrestlers. Basically, the UFC tried to go legit. So, why is this important in considering a Pride fight card?

In The Smashing Machine, director John Hyams strips the surface off of Mark Kerr, showing his inner turmoil and humanity. The documentary starts with Kerrs voice-over, explaining what its like to get hit in the face; on the screen, theres slow motion footage of Kerr in the ring, giving a non-fan a faint idea of mixed martial arts. From there, the camera follows him day-to-day, through his troubled life. Estranged from his family in Toledo, Ohio, all Kerr really has is Dawn, his girlfriend, and as the movie progresses, even that relationship remains shaky. Theres also the issue of Kerrs painkiller abuse after years of collecting injuries, Kerr injects opiates, rather than listening to his body and letting it fully recuperate.

Dynamic Kneebars Stephan Kestings Dynamic Kneebars is unique in that it is a stand alone DVD that is not part of a huge set, and concentrates on one major submission extensively. Many grappling and MMA instructional DVDs come in sets of 6-10 and has a single one hour portion that is usually called something along the lines of Submissions from the top or Submissions from the half guard and covers a number of submissions from that position that may or may not include the kneebar.

Being a good fighter and being a good teacher are two separate and completely different animals. Having met Carlos Newton several times before, I knew that he was intelligent and well spoken, but never having trained with him, I didn't know what to expect from the Seminar.

When I heard several months ago that Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell, and Randy Couture were to have small bit parts in a feature length film with international star Jet Li, I was pleasantly surprised. At long last, a few stars from the world of MMA would be getting a small modicum of recognition by the masses. The masses that swarm to see ridiculous action movies that have the same chance of winning Oscars as I have of winning Bikini contests.
