A night after numerous fights on CBS were stopped in a hurry, there wasn't much stopping at all at WEC 34 from Sacramento's ARCO arena. To simply say the night was long is an understatement, but...the night was long.
30 Donald Cerrone was by far the fastest man of the night, when at only (0:30) of round one he submitted Danny Castillo with an armbar. The victory by Cerrone was umm-uh, not surprising.....
The lightweight is now 8-0 and all his victories have come via
submission. The loss was the hometown boy, Castillo's first through six
bouts.
40 After being handled for two rounds, Tim McKenzie turned it around in
the third when at (0:40) of the round he submitted Jeremy Lang with a
guillotine. The loss was Lang's first and pushed McKenzie's record to
12-5.
6 Chuck Grigsby had (6) inches on Mark Munoz, but the shorter man
fighting in front of his hometown crowd, withstood the bigger light
heavyweights early attack. Then took him down and scored the TKO
victory at 4:15 of round one. The win kept Munoz undefeated at 4-0 and
turned out to be the second shortest fight of the night.
6 The number of fights, (6) to go at least three full rounds. Five of
them resulted in decisions. The fifth was a title fight between Miguel
Torres and Yoshiro Maeda that ended after round three due to a badly
swollen eye. The fast pace affair saw Torres relentless, but Maeda
game, it is too bad it ended when it did. The sixth fight to go at
least three rounds was another title fight...
1 After the bout between Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver for the WEC's
featherweight belt, the number of times (1) Faber had gone five rounds.
And they turned out pretty darn productive. Faber surprisingly used an
impressive stand up game to nullify Pulver's power, and won the contest
in convincing fashion. After the bout the 21-1 Faber said, "Jens has
power. I haven't had a chance to really showcase mine because guys tend
to take it down on the mat. He's such a legend in this sport. He's one
of my heroes. This fight meant so much to me. There's no give in me.
It's the first time I've ever gone five rounds. It was a good test for
me and proof of things I already believed." Pulver, now 22-9-1, gave
Faber props as well saying, "He's fast. He can get in and out. He's
quick."
