David Loiseau over Curtis Stout Decision Rd 3
The semi main event of the evening saw David Loiseau win a unanimous 29-28 decision over UFC veteran Curtis Stout after three rounds. The first round saw the most action of the fight as Loiseau took the kickboxer down and dropped punches and elbows on the face of the Stout in a workmanlike effort even working in a keylock attempt in the process. Loiseau seemed interested in taking the fight to the mat while Stout worked the standup up mixing in effective leg kicks throughout the three round fight.
The second round was slower with Stout working the leg kicks and David getting the takedowns. Loiseau was decidedly less effective from the top in this round compared to round one but did just enough to control the round from the top position.
The third round was a different story however as it seemed that Loiseau was content to be patient and let the fight come to him. He backed up for most of the round and mounted no offense in the final stanza while Stout tried to press the action and exchange strikes. He landed leg kicks again but could not catch up to Loiseau who back pedaled for all of the last round and after the round ended the Judges had the fight ruled a unanimous decision for Loiseau at 2 rounds to 1.
After the fight Loiseau explained that Stout took more punishment then Mark Weir in their fight and was tougher then he expected. Stout put on a strong performance and TKO president explained afterwards that he would like to see Stout come back to fight for TKO possibly in November.
Donald Ouimet over David Goulet KO Rd 2
In the main event Donald Ouimet faced David Goulet in their second consecutive fight in consecutive events. Back at TKO 16 then lightweight champion David Goulet lost his belt to Ouimet after the ref stopped the fight when he thought Ouimet had a rear naked choke on Goulet, despite the fact that he didnt tap out Controversy ensued and a rematch was called. This fight was actually very exciting, it started out fairly even with both fighters getting effective punches on each other to start the fight and both fighters swinging for the fences early. Neither fighter seemed interested in taking the fight to the mat at any point and the former boxer Donald Ouimet took advantage late in the first round. He stung Goulet with a strong punch that dropped him but before Ouimet was able to capitalize the bell rung to end the first stanza.
The second round started and it looked like Goulet hadnt quite recovered from the punch. Ouimet would not let him recover this time and struck him hard dropping him again and the ref was forced to step in and stop the contest. Ouimet defends his belt and it looks like it is a possibility that he will face Sam Stout in his next title defense. Donald Ouimet over David Goulet KO Rd 2
Shane Rice over Mark Hominick 1:46 Rd 1
Shane Rice over came taking the fight on short notice, taking on the TKO champion in a tough fight, as well as fighting off a weight disadvantage and did so in impressive fashion. The fight started with Rice quickly taking down the heavily favored Mark Hominick, shortly after he quickly passed his guard and took his back before sinking in the rear naked choke at 1:46 of the first round. In the second big upset of the night Rice becomes the new TKO Super light weight champion despite going into the fight 0-2 in his TKO and MMA career. Never having met Shane Rice before this event I was alarmed to see him drinking water freely at the weigh ins before he weighed in. He ended up weighing in at 142 pounds without having dieted or cut weight. Before the fight, one of Rices training partners, fellow TKO fighter Kyle Sandford, assured me that Rice would be ready come fight time despite being the heavy underdog, and despite the odds, Rice delivered. MMARR will have a video interview of the new TKO champion in the coming days.
Stephane Simba Vigneault over Stephane The Nordic Thunder Laliberte KO 3:47 Rd 1
Local Victoriaville fighter Stephane Laliberte looked to be bigger then he has in the past and came out to the ring dressed up from head to toe in a Lion costume to the song Just cant wait to be King from the The Lion King soundtrack. His opponent Stephane Vigneaults nickname is Simba, and his brother Steves nickname is The Lionheart, so it seemed Laliberte was interested in playing mind games with his opponent early on. It wasnt so much fun for him in the ring however as Laliberte controlled distance and dominated the stand up despite being taken down. He slowly wore Laliberte down with strikes and finished the fight with an incredible spinning backfist to the face that knocked him out and sent him to the mat for good. Vigneault has been on a major winning streak and could be close to getting in line for a title shot with Shane Rice who is the new TKO champion and is a fighter that he has defeated in the past.
Jonathan Goulet over Joey Brown 0:05 Rd 1
Jonathan Goulet has risen from being a very mediocre fighter to being one of the most improved fighters in the TKO organization. He proved it all again against Renzo Gracie student Knockdown Joey Brown. 5 seconds into the fight he drove a knee into Browns chin off a clinch that KOd him completely and in doing so now holds the record for the fastest TKO in TKO history as well as what could unofficially be the fastest KO in recent memory. It seems Goulet has been training with UFC welterweight challenger Georges St. Pierre and future UFC competitor Patrick Cote of late and at the post fight press conference Goulet challenged Jason Black to a fight in a future TKO event. Jonathan Goulet over Joey Brown 0:05 Rd 1
Fabio Holanda over Kultar Gill Rd 1 Kimura
One of two big upsets on the night saw the newly relocated Brazilian Top Team black belt face off against a man that was considered by most to be the best lightweight in Canada. Kultar Gill, a kickboxer with strong wrestling and grappling skills seemed to be the heavy favorite having given an impressive performance against the number one UFC lightweight Yves Edwards a few years back as well as dominating the local Canadian scene of late. None of that mattered to Holanda however, who took a vicious leg kick and used the opportunity to drive in and get the takedown, Gill fought it off as long as he could be eventually Holanda was able to take the top position and worked for what he described as his favorite submission, the Kimura. Gill again fought it off as long as he could holding on and twisting and turning with the jiu jitsu man but eventually Holanda sunk it in and Gill was forced to tap out. After the fight at the post fight press conference, Holanda had trouble walking around and his right leg looked to be in quite bad shape. Fabio Holanda over Kultar Gill Rd 1 Kimura
Sam Stout over Steve Claveau KO 3:07 Rd 1
Short fights were the norm of the night and this fight was no different. The Team Thompkins fighter from London Ontario, Sam Hands of Stone Stout was coming off an impressive win over Yves Jabouin in his last fight at TKO 16 and faced off against local talent Steve The Snake Claveau. Claveau started off the fight strong and after a brief exchange on the feet he quickly took the fight to the mat where he had the advantage. There he asserted his will on the young kickboxer taking the mount quickly and worked on an armbar that looked to have finished the fight. A sneaky reversal by Stout bought him a brief respite but it wasnt long before Claveau re-secured the dominant position and dropped heavy punches onto Stout that had him in trouble again. To Stouts credit he stayed calm and eventually snuck his way out again into Claveaus guard where he would find his mark. This time he would not let an opportunity pass him buy and drove his elbows into Claveaus face and the side of the head until a steady stream of blood splattered the mat and the ref came into to stop the bout. In addition to winning the fight Stout also wins the third MMA Ring Report fighter of the night award for his impressive performance. Sam Stout gets his third consecutive TKO win over Steve Claveau KO 3:07 Rd 1
Ryan Diaz over Thierry Quenneville 2:11 Rd 2
Before the fight Diaz approached me and told me he was going to try something Special in his fight, and considering he finished his previous fight, with a flying triangle choke over Ryan Ackerman, it was hard to imagine what he was going to try. True to his word, Diaz ended the fight in an impressive reverse triangle choke in a very entertaining bout. Diaz asserted his will from the get go over Quenneville, a young fighter training out of the same gym as Georges St. Pierre and David Loiseau. With the exception one submission attempt in the corner where Quenneville caught Diaz in an Achilles lock transitioned into a heel hook, Diaz controlled the fight. Quenneville could not finish the submission in his only opportunity and it cost him in the end. Diaz controlled the stand up and got the takedowns when he needed it controlling position on the ground until his opportunity arose in the second round where he sunk the Special choke to seal the deal. After his loss to Mark Hominick he has three straight wins, two in TKO and has put himself back into the 145 pound TKO picture. Diaz over Thierry Quenneville 2:11 Rd 2.
Iccho Larenas over Bryan McGee KO 0:17 Rd 1
In one of the scarier fights of the night Iccho Larenas whos arms were almost as thick as his thighs used his power to overwhelm McGee from the ring of the bell. Larenas stormed across the right firing wild punches and McGee did his best to defend but was taking damage and as he turned around Larenas sent him through the ropes and McGee landed head first on the mat. His body was still supported by the middle rope and he laid perched on the ropes motionless with his head on the mat. His head hit first right in front of the press table with a resounding crack and he was out cold for several minutes. Eventually he came to and was fine to stand for the announcement of the winner, and even had a few drinks at the after party but for a few moments it looked like he had been seriously hurt. Iccho Larenas over Bryan McGee KO 0:17 Rd 1
Ulisses Rocha over Sylvain Cloutier Decision Rd 3
Rocha used the takedowns as well as some well placed punches totake the three round decision over Cloutier who apparently eye gouging Rocha on a number of occasions. After the fight Rocha showed off his face and he had scratches all over his face and around his eyes. Rocha seems to have a bright future ahead of him, in his two mma fights, an impressive performance at the Apex event that took place just three weeks before, along with his performance on this night despite the short 2 days notice, have shown flashes that should lead to a successful MMA career. Ulisses Rocha over Sylvain Cloutier Decision Rd 3
Serge Lafond over Yan Pichette KO 1:41 Rd 1
In an entertaining but short fight Serge Lafond proved that looks can be deceiving as he of the less imposing build stood toe to toe with his muscled opponent and ended the fight with a kick to the body followed up by a punch to the face that dropped his opponent and forced the referee to step in. Serge Lafond over Yan Pichette KO 1:41 Rd 1
Phillipe Lagace over Mark Loft Rear Naked Choke 4:30 Rd 1
Lagace, who is one of Patrick Cotes jiu jitsu coaches showed a more well rounded game then he has in the past and used his punches to sting Loft and force him to go for the takedown. He didnt have much success there either as Lagace showed why he is known for his ground game and finished Loft with a rear naked choke. Phillipe Lagace over Mark Loft Rear Naked Choke 4:30 Rd 1
John Fraser over Sean Ragnitz Triange Choke 4:18 Rd 1
John The Haggis Basher Fraser took the fight late into the first round with a well timed triangle choke. John Fraser over Sean Ragnitz Triange Choke 4:18 Rd 1
