The time had finally come and Pete Spratt would finally face off against TKOs welterweight goldenboy Georges St Pierre. Problems had plagued this fight since it was announced for TKO 13, and at times seemed like the fight would never happen. The first time out St Pierre injured his knee and was unable to compete, in between, there was controversy with an unknown impersonator calling into a radio show and talking smack about Pete Spratt claiming to be Georges St Pierre. In Nov more smack talk surfaced and It came to a head with Spratt firing back at St Pierre questioning his motives for dropping out of the first fight. "Rush" replied to a reporter from Montreal by saying "Spratt is soon going to wish that I dropped out of this fight too." The fight was finally going to happen. Who would be able to win the war of wills? The stand up phenom, who has been successful at the highest level of MMA in North America by winning in the UFC, or the man that TKO is hoping to be the next best welterweight to break out onto the international scene after Carlos Newton? The main event wouldnt be the only fight to light up the TKO skies and many new TKO fighters emerged as some of the most exciting fighters in the in Canada.
Pete Spratt Vs Georges St Pierre
The fight was finally going to happen. Months of smack talk, rescheduling and waiting was finally over and Pete Spratt and St Pierre were finally going to settle their differences in the ring. Spratt opened up with a right kick and Georges seized the opportunity closing the distance fast and taking the stand up warrior to the mat right from the get go. Georges pushed the action on the ground going from half guard to side mount and then to full mount before the first minute was out. Spratt gave his back in the hopes of getting out of the bad situation and was successful for a moment reversing into St Pierres guard but his fortune was not meant to last on this night. St Pierre pulled off a textbook jiu jitsu reversal going from his back right to the full mount. Spratt again gave his back and this time he would not get out. George sunk his hooks in and found himself in a position that was reminiscent of Matt Hughes Vs Frank Trigg, Spratt stood up with Georges on his back sinking the choke. The end result was the same, the choke was already in too deep, and Spratt fell back and tapped out from the choke at 3:42 of the first stanza.
Steve Vigneault Vs Patrick Cote
In one of the bigger shocks of the night we saw one of Montreals heros fall to a younger and bigger Patric Cote. Vigneaults boxing presence was felt early as skimmed Cotes face on a couple occasions before Cote shot for the takedown. Vigneault sprawled impressively stymieing the shoot, but what happened next when they began trading on the feet shocked everyone in attendance. Cote tagged Vigneault dropping him to a knee, Vigneault valiantly jumped right back up only to take the knockout punch from Cote that ended his night. Cote is impressive in only his second apearance in the TKO ring and now holds the TKO Canadian Lightheavyweight belt. It looks like a clash with "The Butcher" BIll Mahood is inevitable at this point and at the post fight press conference TKO president confirmed the speculation.
Steve Claveau Vs Ryan Diaz
In the humble opinion of this reporter, this fight was the best fight of the night and packed enough action in less then one round to fill an entire 3 round fight. This fight was shades of Denis Kang Vs Joe Doerkson as the two warriors went to war in the ring from bell to bitter end. From the get go Claveau surprised Diaz, as well as many of the fans, by showing a remarkable improvement in his stand up game. He stunned Diaz, who was considered by most to be the superior striker, finding his distance and finding his mark. Diaz was able to recover and came back with a knee - punch combination in return, only to be stunned again and dropped in the corner. The fight went back and forth with strikes and submissions until finally Diaz trapped Claveau in a very tight triangle and Claveau tapped just in the nick of time. It seemed like "The Snake" was on the verge of going unconscious and flopped to his back in bitter defeat. Both fighters fought their hearts out and both fighters hurt each other at one time or another, but in the end the Lion proved to be the king of the jungle and the snake was left to ponder what went wrong. With a 1 and 4 record it would be a shame not to see Claveau back in the ring, as he proved that the record does not tell the whole story of the fighter. Both fighters left everything in the ring and put on a show for the crowd, in my opinion the best fight of the night.
Yan Pellerin Vs Cameron Brown
Pellerin dominated from the get go getting the takedown early and going from halfguard, to side mount, and finally to full mount. From there he dropped thunderous elbows and punches that resonated throughout the building. Brown showed an unbreakable resolve however and worked on bucking Pellerin off but it was not to be, Pellerin continued to drive hard rights and elbows onto his head until the ref had no choice but to stop the fight. Pellerin gets a much needed win to put him back in the light heavyweight picture after his loss to Cote, and Brown showed the chin and resolve of a warrior but came up short on this night. Pellerin wins by ref stoppage TKO round one.
David Goulet Vs Shawn Davidson
In the main event of the evening Goulet showed the heart of a champion and the ground and pound of a seasoned veteran grinding and drilling his way to a K.O victory over Shawn Davidson, who had been out of the game for almost two years. He was able to secure the takedown early and showed a very effective ground attack from Davidsons guard. Davidson took some punishment but dished out some of his own slapping on a tight armbar, and it looked like the end was near for the local boy. Davidson worked the Armbar and unbelievably Goulet escaped after enduring the painful looking submission attempt for what seemed like almost a full minute. Davidson was slick from his back working for a heel hook as well but in the end Goulets ground attack was too much and a thunderous right hand finished him. Goulet saw that Davidson was finished and stepped out of his guard and began celebrating before the ref stepped in. The ref pointed at the stunned fighter who had made his way to his feet by this time, and gestured to Goulet that the fight was not over yet. Goulet could of had free shots on Davidson who was still clearly stunned but instead jumped on his back and worked for a choke. From there Davidson looked like he signaled that he was finished and the ref finally stepped in. Later on in the evening at the post fight press conference Goulet explained that when he hit Davidson with the punch he saw that he was done and didnt want to punish him any more because he knew Davidson had a wife and children, and instead went for the submission. Props to Goulet who showed the heart of the champion, and more importantly the heart of a true sportsman. Goulet wins by Ref stoppage Round one.
Stephane Laliberte Vs "Pain" Peters
Bad Blood was in the air as Laliberte, a man that defeated Peters brother on two occassions came out to the ring to put the final nail in the coffin of the last Peters brother. In the other corner Pain Peters smelled redemption for not only his family, but his carreer as well. It started off strong for Laliberte who caught Peters with a stiff shot early and things looked grim for the man they call "Pain". Peters would steady himself however and Pain put his past behind him and took what he came for, taking Laliberte down and eventually finishing him in the first round via rear naked choke. Peters looked impressive getting the takedown and the submission and redeemed his last few performances, most of which were difficult to watch at times, Pain Peters is back.
Jeff Joslin Vs Jonathan Goulet
In a very exciting back and forth fight, Joslin and Goulet went to war for two strong rounds. When the fight was originally announced many people felt that Goulet was in over his head and would be nothing more then a stepping stone for Joslins inevitable rise up the welterweight ranks, and fight would be over early, that was clearly not the case. Goulets submission defense looked remarkably improved and his ground and pound was effective in the first round, tagging Joslin enough to get some points with the judges while staying out of some very dangerous submission attempts from the Jiu Jitsu expert. This round was close. The second round was different however as Joslin controlled the whole round with strong position getting to mount and controlling the round from beginning to end. Goulet did enough to stay out of any fight ending submissions but mounted precious little offense in the second stanza. Some of the loudest cheering of the night was reserved for Goulet who seemed to have the whole crowd fainting at his every gesture. That may have been what swayed the views of the judges as surprisingly the two round war went to Goulet via unanimous decision. MMARR had this fight 9-10, 10-9 for a draw but the judges thought otherwise and Goulet squeaked out an undeserved unanimous decision. Both fighters fought their hearts out and put on what many felt was the fight of the night, but the decision tainted what should have been remembered as a great fight, not a bad decision. Both Judges decisions on the night were questionable, raising the question, if this fight happened anywhere else would it still have been ruled a Unanimous decision for Goulet?
Kyle Sandford Vs Michael Lachance
Kyle sandford proved that he has more then one sumbission in his arsenal and armbarred the outmatched and undersized Michael Lachance. Sandford looked impressive in his fight and looks to be ready to take the next step in his evolution as a top Canadian Middleweight. With the limited number of Candian Middleweights he may be best served to find an American opponent with a similar number of fights, who is willing to step into the TKO arena. Kang Doerkson, and Loiseau are ready to move into the international stage and it is good to see that the middleweight youth movement is in good hands with Sandford.
"Ragin" Kajun Johnson Vs Thierry Quenneville
In one of only two decisions on the night Johnson and Quenneville fought to what appeared to be a draw. Johnson controlled the first round of the two round fight scoring with sharp stand up skills and good takedown defense. On a couple of occasions it appeared as if he stunned the young wrestler but Queneville was able to compose himself into the second round. The second round was a different story however and Quenneville was able to stifle a knee attempt and turn it into a takedown for himself and grounded and pounded his way to a solid second round, he was active sporadically but did enough to squeak out the round. Unfortunately the Judges gave the split decision to Quenneville after two rounds. MMARR had the fight 10-9, 9-10 for a draw after two rounds but it appears the that the local boy got the home town decision. Of note, throughout the night, many fighters were stood up for inaction but when Quenneville was inactive from Johnsons guard it wasnt stood up. Inconsistency in the reffing tainted this fight slightly although on the whole the Reffing was vastly improved from past shows. Quenneville wins the split decision after 2 rounds.
A look back
Upsets were the name of the game at The TKO Road Warriors show in VIctoriaville Quebec as a local hero in Montreal fell. Steve Vigneualts impressive four years without a loss came to and end and UFC veteran and favorite Pete Spratt was overthrown by the young Georges St Pierre. Many felt the most lopsided fight of the night would be Jonathan Goulet vs Jeff Joslin but the young phenom was over thrown and Joslin will have the first loss [albeit underserved] on his young career. The crowd was vibrant and backed the local fighter shaking the building at times with their rousing chants and infectious energy. With the win it appears that St Pierre is on track to move on to bigger and better things with a possible spot in a future UFC not out of the question. Reffing was markedly improved over past events which has been terrible at the worst of times and inconsistent at the best of times. It was still not a perfect night for the Quebec athletic commission refs but a vast improvement is 10 steps in the right direction. 7 out of 9 fights were over in the first round, and the other two fights went to the decision after two rounds. The judges decisions were the only variables that tarnished what was an energetic event, MMARR had both the Kajan Johnson Vs Thierry Quenneville fight, and the Jonathan Goulet Vs Jeff Joslin fight as draws but both fights went to the local fighters. JDs aside, TKO 14 was a step in the right direction for TKO which seems to be moving in the right direction. Hats off to the TKO for a solid show, and look for a strong TKO 15 show early next year..-MMARR-
