Just a few short months ago the Vancouver Athletics commission did not allow MMA shows to take place in their jurisdiction. The WFF and their promoter, David Lea set off to change that with WFF 3, they showed the commission how safe and professional the sport of MMA really was, and it was time for WFF 4 to show the fans what it was they already knew, that MMA was the best and most exciting show in the world. With the support of the Vancouver Athletics commission in tow for the second show in the history of MMA, the WFF was looking to expand on the success of previous endeavors. The trials and tribulations of the past hurdles were behind them, the public lenience and allowance of having an "Ö.K" show in the face of all these problems were gone. No more excuses, It was time for the WFF to show the fans of the sport in Vancouver what the had to offer the entertainment world. Would they deliver or would they falter in the face of the biggest show in their history?

Denis Kang Vs Chris Peak

The main event fighter of the inaugural WFF show in Kelowna, was back to headline the show for the third time out of four shows. His first time out he faced off against well known Dennis Hallman and gave him all he could handle before throwing an illegal kick that knocked out Hallman and a No Contest ensued. He returned for WFF 2 and took on muscle-bound heavyweight Shane Biever and defeated him via armlock in the first round to take the win in convincing fashion. Two losses in a row, one to Joe Doerkson in the UCC, and the second against Jason Miller in Extreme Challenge had him on the lookout to get back on the winning track. His Opponent was originally scheduled to be Stephane Potvin but a serious Rib injury incurred while training his partner Kristof Midoux forced him to the sidelines. In stepped Chris Peak with 12 hours notice to fill the main event bout against a tough Dennis Kang in a title bout. It was clear from the outset that Kang was focused and ready to snap his losing streak, Kang caught a mid trajectory kick by Peak and took the fight to the mat. Kang who was had competed in the Abu Dhabi qualifiers in San Diego quickly passed the guard and took Peak’s back, the obligatory rear naked ensued. The fight was over in 57 seconds and Kang had what he came for. Kang wins via rear naked Choke at :57 seconds of round one.
Cameron Brown Vs Bill Mahood

This fight would be a rematch, Mahood bettered Brown via TKO in April of 2002 and Brown was looking for revenge. Mahood had been quite active of late competing regularly butt Brown had not competed in quite some time, his last fight being a loss to Jason Mcdonald in the MFC. In the past WFF, Brown was set to face off against MFC veteran Chris Peak, but Peak was unable to fight due to internal bleeding caused buy a rib bone puncturing his intestines after a visit to Tony Roma’s, but the layoff did not seem to negatively affect Browns performance on this night. This marathon battle was back and forth for the duration of the three five minute rounds with both fighters refusing to give an inch. Neither fighter wanted another blemish on their records and their hearts showed it in spades, with both fighters in dominant positions at one point or another during the fight and both fighters hurting each other with strikes. Spinning back kicks, haymakers, hammerfists and knee’s were in full force for the second best fight on the night. The fight was evenly matched up and if it wasn’t for the Ulysses Castro Vs Yan Pellerin fight, this fight would have easily been the fight of the night. Knee’s from the clinch, takedowns galore, and punishment from all facets of an MMA fight littered this fight and both fighters came out with a well deserved draw after three hard fought rounds of action. This fight was declared a majority draw after three five minute rounds.

Max “Little Sumo” Marin Vs Curtis Brigham

Coming off a loss to fellow card-mate Ivan Menjivar after a three fight winning streak that included wins over Ryan Diaz and Jason Towns, the champion of the 145 division in the WFF was ready to resume his winning ways and on his road to victory stood Curtis Brigham. Rings veteran Curtis Brigham was a relative unknown but had been in the ring with qualified fighters such as CJ Fernandez and future UFC 42 main event headliner Sean "The Shark" Sherk. Max Marin was the heavy favorite coming into this bout but Brigham seemed focused and ready for battle. His focus would pay off as he easily dispatched of the heavily favored Max Marin taking his back and after a couple of failed attempts finally sinking the tight rear naked choke at 56 seconds of the first round. Ivan Menjivar Vs Brandon Shuey

Relatively unknown outside of Canada but considered to be one of the premier 145 fighters in the sport, Menjivar has even moved up two weight classes and fought one of the premier 170 pounders in the world in Jason Black in past events. Even in the loss he was impressive in his resolve and went on to defeat competitors such as former WFF champion Max Marin and tough Jiu Jitsu man Jeff Curren. Ivan Menjivar as always looked calm and collected in the ring, he methodically worked the fight to the mat, softened Shuey up with solid blows from the guard, and eventually swung around from the top position and took the very slick looking kneebar at 38 second mark of the first round. Menjivar once again served notice that he skills are for real. Menjivar wins via Kneebar round 1, 0:38 seconds

Ulysses Castro Vs Yan Pellerin

Yan Pellerin took the fight on two days notice and ate over a 50 pound weight difference to come and compete in the show. He showed the heart and determination of a champion in the face of an uphill battle and put on the fight of the night, and an early candidate for the fight of the year with the help of Ulysses Castro. Castro is coming off recent wins over Kevin Psaila, Paul Trudel, Shane Biever and most recently the world famous Dan "The Beast" Severn so his talents are for real. Originally scheduled to face off against Kristof Midoux, a hand injury forced Midoux to the sidelines and propelled Pellerin into the fight on short notice. Pellerin started the contest out very quickly landing straight shots to the nose and face of Castro, it looked like Castro would be in a bit of trouble early on and his battered and bloodied nose told the story of the punishment he was taking. He battled however and the ref came in and halted the action to take a closer look at the nose. The nose looked to be in bad shape but not enough to stop the fight and he took advantage of the opportunity fighting back and stunning Pellerin on several occasions to return the favor. At the midpoint of the first round Castro was able to get the mount on Pellerin, Pellerin however, was able to jab off his back and rebloody the nose of Castro and his nose started bleeding into the mouth of Pellerin. Pellerin gagged and the ref stopped the fight in favor of Pellerin due to the profusely bloody nose of Castro, even though Castro was in the mount position. Confusion ensued and the bout was restarted after a five minute rest period for both fighters. When the fight continued both fighters batlled hard again exchanging blow after blow to the face in the standing position until Yan was taken to the ground by Ulysses Castro and Castro took the back mount and choked him out rear naked style. The ending to the fight was controversial and after a talk to the referee the promoter of the event and several others on the scene we were told that the fight may be declared a no contest but that is uncertain at this point. One thing that was for certain was the whole building exploded while this fight was taking place and the crowd came alive during this bout.

Nick Ring Vs Kevin Dolan

One of the more lopsided bouts of the evening saw Kevin Dolan absorbing more then his fair share of punishment for the duration of the short bout. Dolan was staggered early, taking a head kick to start the bout, and things did not improve from there. Knee’s and eventually punches came at him in waves until he had absorbed enough punishment to the head and tapped out at 1:20 of the first round. Dolan never really mounted any offence before Ring pounced on him and secured the outcome of the bout early. Nick Ring wins via Tapout at 1:20 in round one.

Paul Forde defeated Mike Bosa via armlock in a good display of heart and determination. Forde was losing the fight on the strength of a vicious ground and pound attack of Mike Bosa who looked very calm and collected in the ring. Forde bided his time until he was able to secure the tight armbar forcing Bosa to tap and into the losers column. Forde takes the victory at 4:20 of the first round.

Chad Hamzeh defeated Justin Livingston via Judges decision. Livingston was able to ground and pound his way to a strong round one but the tides turned in the second round. Hamzeh was able to take the top position and rain solid blows to the face and body of Livingston and did enough damage in the second round to get the judges decision in his favor after two hard fought rounds.

Len Smith was able to defeat Rob Acton in the first preliminary bout of the evening by rear naked choke at 3:48 of the first round.

A Look Back

I didn’t know what to expect on the heels of an average show the last time out for the WFF. The WFF 3 event was marred with bad luck as injuries, no shows and even accidents such as Chris Peak puncturing his intestines from swallowing a rib bone the night before his fight stained a once promising card. The bad luck was still in the air as Kristof Midoux, Stephane Potvin and others had to drop out of their fights on short notice but the pleasant surprises were many on this night as well. Almost all of the fights went off without a hitch and in terms of excitement, the fights themselves turned out to be among the best in the history of the WFF, A great way to kick off the WFF’s second show in Western Canada under the watchful eye of the Vancouver Athletics commission. The Crowd looked to be pumped and very excited about the card that took place and the first fireworks show for the WFF were a nice touch. To top things off international MMA superstar Carlos Newton was in attendance looking on and made an appearance to the delight of the fans. All the right things went right this time and the bad luck was not the factor it was the last time the show rolled into town. The strengths of the show in all other facets of the game vastly outweighed any negatives on this night. All the factors added up to a very entertaining package that was well worth the price of admission, with the show rolling and the experience of another show in their books, it is looking like the WFF has nowhere to go but upwards and onwards, bad luck be damned.
