Last Saturday night, several hundred MMA fans were treated to an action packed night of fighting at the Medley in Montreal with UGC 9 : Extreme Adrenaline. The night featured 7 amateur boxing matches, 1 pro boxing match and 10 MMA bouts. We were entertained in this Club atmosphere with good D.Js and attractive ring girls. One thing I would have appreciated in all this, was a place at ringside for the media, like most pro shows, instead, I had a good seat in the first row and was writing on my knees.

Right after the amateur boxing matches, all the MMA fighters were presented to the crowd in the middle of the ring a la Pride FC. «Les princes de la rue», the young street kids helped by UGC president, Charles Ali Nestor, were also invited in the ring. On an interesting note, Ali Nestor told me that he was currently helping 20 kids at his Academy, Ness Martial arts, and that he would soon be opening a center to help those kids with their homework and give them internet access. Theres also the possibility of the Canadian government getting involved in this awesome project. Finally, to the sounds of Poundhertz, the action was ready to start. Wendy Kernizan vs. Stephen Hazelton The first bout of the evening saw newcomer Wendy Kernizan, who was cornered by David Loiseau, come out gunning against Stephen Hazelton and quickly getting the early takedown. He was able to lay some great rights on his opponents, through the guard but the referee eventually brought it back up to the feet. Kernizan would not let up however, and immediately came back with a right hand that rocked Hazelton, and got another quick take down. After a series of unanswered rights, the referee had no choice but to stop the action and awarded the TKO victory to Kernizan at 2:09 of the first round. Kevin Duquette vs. Richard Ho This bout featured the younger brother of TKO fighter, Steve Duquette. Would we see the younger Duquette turn out to be a similar fighter to his older sibling? We would soon find out. Richard Ho came out with hard leg kicks and showed sharp boxing skills before being taken down by Duquette. On his back, Ho showed great defense and the referee soon brought the fight back up to the feet. From here on out it was all Ho, he threw effective kicks and soon found himself in a full guard on a hopeless opponent. In a matter of seconds, he was able to sink in a rear naked choke to finish the fight at 1:45 of the first round. Ryan Gabourie vs. Steve Legeault Legeault, who was coming of a disappointing loss in the first installment of Apex last September, was looking to improve on his past performance and was cornered by local fighter Stephan Potvin. From the outset, both fighters were cautious and tangoed around the ring for a while but eventually, Legeault got the takedown but was unable to seize the advantage. He tried to pass the guard and threw in some lefts but as the referee was bringing the fight up, Gabourie looked to be injured. After a quick look from the doctor, the bout was stopped because of a broken middle finger, a broken finger which I could clearly see from my vantage point. In the end, Steve Legeault won by TKO (medical stoppage) at 3:10 of the first round. Alexandre Héroux vs. Aimé Henripin Alexandre Héroux started the affair with a back suplex and almost sunk in the rear naked choke but Henripin was resourceful and was able to reverse the position and get himself into his opponents guard. Henripin almost got caught in a choke again but escaped again and, unleashed a series of elbows, knees and shoulders on his opponent. At the end of the first round, Héroux got the full mount and worked on an armbar to finish things off but the bell rang. Héroux looked very tired and didnt answer the bell at the start of the second round and after a hard fought round, Aimé Henripin won by TKO (abandon) at 5:00 of the first round Chester Post vs. Shawn Russell In the fifth match of the night, Russell overpowered Post with a single leg slam to found himself in the sidemount position and from there, he was able to land knees. Post answered with a choke attempt and soon reversed the position in his favor. For the most part of the round, both fighters exchanged some knees that left Russell in a bloody mess, but Post was unable to finish before the sound of the bell. At the start of the second round, Russell tried another slam but to no avail and almost got caught in a choke in the process. Later in this round, both fighters found themselves working on ankle lock attempts but Chester Post soon ended the match with three knees to get the TKO at 3:01 of the second round. Cory Macdonald vs. Eric Beaulieu This bout was the first of five titles to be decided on this night. Macdonald and Beaulieu, who was cornered by Georges St-Pierre and Stephan Potvin, were fighting to claim the Welterweight UGC belt. Throughout the first round, Beaulieu got the takedowns only to be reversed immediately by Macdonald. At one point, Beaulieu found himself in a bad situation were he received a few blows to the head and was forced into survival mode but he eventually worked his way out of his bad position. Before the end of the round, Beaulieu showcased some of his submission skills with a triangle attempt as well as a rear naked choke attempt but could finish neither. The second round was all Beaulieu. At one point, he found himself in a 69 position and was able to land some Jack Strap shots. He later got a full mount, and worked yet another rear naked choke attempt but Macdonald was able to reverse it and stay alive. The third round was also hard fought, but Beaulieu got the better of it and was not able to finish an armbar attempt and couldnt capitalize from the full mount. In the end, Eric Beaulieu won a unanimous decision after three rounds to become the UGC Welterweight Champion. Greg Compton vs. Richard Ho Greg Compton was to fight Sylvain Cloutier, but finally found himself facing Richard Ho, who came in for a second match in one night against a man that had yet to compete that night. Both fighters were trying to claim the super lightweight belt and Ho started pretty much the same as his first match and came in with great standup. He even tried a spinning back kick followed by a series of knees. In a back and forth display of abilities from both fighters, Compton took control as the round went by and almost ended it with a triangle. At the sound of the bell, Richard Ho went on his knees and needed help to go back to his corner. Unfortunately for him, two matches in one night seemed too much for this young fighter and he didnt answer the second round bell. Greg Compton was awarded the UGC super lightweight belt by TKO (abandon) at 5:00 of the first round. But from the effort that was showcased in this match, we could well see a rematch between these two warriors in the near future. Lucian Bute vs. Willard Lewis The following match was the only pro boxing match on the card. The Interbox boxer, Lucian Bute showed the crowd why he has the skills to eventually take him to a world championship match. Early in the match, it looked like Bute was trying to get a few rounds of practice under his belt and toyed with Lewis. In the third round, he became more aggressive and it was a miracle that Lewis finished it on its feet. Lewiss corner did the right thing and threw in the towel before the start of the fourth round. Lucian Bute wins by TKO at 3:00 of round three. After the fight WBC World Champion, Eric Lucas, came in and invited the fans to his boxing card on the 3rd of December, where he will be making his ring return in the hopes of eventually getting another title shot. Fritz Paul vs. Scott Elliot Scott Elliot came in as the underdog against the Animal, Fritz Paul, who was cornered by his friend and UFC veteran David The Crow Loiseau. He got a quick takedown but was overpowered right away, in the half mount position, Paul was able to unleash a series of punches, elbows to the ribs, and left hands to his opponents head. In that short amount of time, he was able to deliver between ten to fifteen shot before the referee stopped the action. The Animal Fritz Paul won by TKO at 3:38 of the first round to capture the UGC Middleweight Championship. In the future I expect to see some great from this young Ness Martial Arts fighter. Yves Jabouin vs Dustin Severs Ness Martial fighter Yves the Tiger Jabouin, came in cornered by non-other than Ivan Menjivar and David Loiseau. The first round was all Jabouin, on the feet and on the ground, Severs didnt have the tools to make his opponent pay for his mistakes. At the start of the second round, Jabouin was able to land a good left uppercut that rocked Severs and got the takedown and worked a series of elbows to the ribs and head. With the exception of a leg lock attempt by Severs, this round also belonged to the Ness Martial fighter. The third round was much the same and Jabouin came in with a high kick followed by a takedown where he found himself in a sidemount. Again, he was able to land elbows and knees on his opponent, Severs was able to withstand Jabouins attempts to finish the match but without any doubt in anybodies mind, Yves Jabouin won a unanimous decision after three rounds to become the UGC Lightweight Champion. Ricardeau François vs. Michael Marshalleck This match was the first one for François, following his upset of Wes Simms at the Apex show last September. This bout was for the UGC Heavyweight belt. Even if he was outweighed by almost 40 pounds, François showed some great skills for a guy so tall and lanky. Remember, hes 66 and frequently fights at light heavyweight. In the first round, he was able to land a flying spinning back kick and a regular spinning back kick. The strength of Marshalleck was a little factor in this round, but both fighters seemed exhausted at the end of the affair. In the second round, François came in with a flying knee, followed by a series of uppercuts and knees. He continued with a high kick, a spinning back kick and a knee to the head of his opponent. The third round was more of the same and after another flying knee and a series of punches, the referee stopped the action at 1:55 of the third round. The Ness Martial fighter was awarded the UGC Heavyweight Belt. Like its predecessors, UGC 9 was action packed with TKOS and almost no decisions. As of yet there is no date set for the upcoming UGC 10 event. Special thanks to www.ultimefanatic.com for the use of their photos for this story.
