When Edmonton's Nick The Quiet Assassin Penner takes on Kamloopss Sandy Pembroke in the main event of TFC 4: Retribution at Shaw Conference Centre on Aug. 29, aficionados of mixed martial arts will witness a blast from MMA's past.
The fight will be a three-round kickboxing match which would seem to favor Pembroke - the 2005 WKA world champion at 91 kg. Pembroke is far more experienced in this discipline than Penner, who's trying to balance MMA with a burgeoning career as a pro boxer. Now 3-0 as a boxer and 4-1 in MMA, Penner will try his hand in professional kickboxing.
Whether it's boxing, MMA or kickboxing, I want to make a statement, and the best way to do that is by scoring an impressive KO. So far in the cage, I've had some success ... but I've also lost. I'm still learning ... I just want it to come a little quicker, said Penner.
The semi-main event will showcasehomegrown banger Levi Kump against Lethbridge brawler John Laing. Kump, an experienced warrior who's equally adept with hands or feet, won't have an easy time with Laing, who notched TKO victories in his last two outings.
The MMA portion of Retribution will see a showdown between unbeaten B.C. rivals Conan Brandon Carlick of Kamloops and Vancouver's Dave Henry, and a trio of grudge matches: Mike Froese vs. Dan Walders; Brent Haley vs. Chris Conlan; and Kevin Dolan vs. Edmonton's own Tim Shady Smith.
The tentative card is as follows
Nick Penner vs. Sandy Penbroke
Levi Kump vs. John Laing
Conan Brandon Carlick vs. Dave Henry
Mike Froese vs. Dan Walders
Brent Haley vs. Chris Conlan
Kevin Dolan vs. Time Smith
