Strikeforce: Nortje tames the Beast
MMA News Written by Mike Neva
Monday, 25 February 2008

ImageFrom the outset; the southpaw Nortje quickly found his range and peppered Sapp with left after left. It didn't take long for Sapp to wilt under the onslaught as he repeatedly turned away from the punches of Nortje, not attempting to block the blows, simply cowering from them. Eventually Sapp crumpled to the mat and was mercifully saved by the referee. It took all of 55 seconds for Nortje to topple the Beast.

The main event would not produce the only upset of the evening, as little known Cory Devela slammed his way to a shocking victory against the well traveled Joe Riggs. After a brief feeling out period, the fighters clinched as they jockeyed for a dominant position. It was Devela who shifted his weight perfectly and executed a spectacular hip toss, which had Riggs immediately writhing in pain. Riggs tapped from an apparent back injury and was taken out on a stretcher.

Immediately following the fight MMARR asked Riggs' trainer, Billy Rush, if he had more information on the extent of the injury, and Rush simply replied , "no."

It's been nearly eleven years since Maurice Smith shocked the mma world by dispatching the previously undefeated Mark Coleman in one of the most monumental upsets in mma history. Now 46, Smith has never lost the will to compete and has periodically stepped into the ring or cage to fill his competitive juices. With a four month training camp under his belt, Smith looked as calm and confident as ever, as he took on 41 year old Rick Roufus in his mma debut. In a sight not familiar to most mma fans, Smith initiated a takedown on the ill-prepared Roufus. From the top, Smith patiently worked his way into the mount and finished the fight with an Americana arm lock.

Affectionately known as "bathroom", Eddy Ellis stepped up on short notice to take on the battle tested Steve Berger in a welterweight affair. With each combatant tallying over 30 mma fights, it wasn't surprising to see this fight go the distance, but it was surprising to see Ellis, ten years the junior of Berger, controlled the majority of the contest. After splitting the first two rounds, Ellis dominated the third stanza as he took Berger down and kept him down while the hometown Tacoma crowd cheered him on. Although Berger was able to survive the precarious third round it was not near enough as Ellis earned a unanimous decision victory.

In a bout that had the crowd sitting on their collect hands for the majority of the 15 minute affair; Ryan Healy nullified most of Jorge Mavidal's offensive attacks, but simply couldn't put together nearly enough of his own offence to put Masvidal in any real danger. Masvidal played it safe and won a relatively non-descript unanimous decision.

The prelims fights were highlighted by a dominant performance by the currently unbeaten Lyle Beerbohm. Although most are attracted to his fluorescent fight shorts, it would be short-sighted to gloss over the skills of this up and comer. With a wrestling pedigree and excellent cardio, Beerbohm trounced Ray Perales for the duration of their bout. Beerbohm finished off Perales with a guillotine choke early in round 3.

In other action, Mychal Clark beat Josh Bennett by a TKO doctor stoppage from a swollen eye after two rounds. Mike Hayes outlasted Matt Kovas for a unanimous decision. Zach Skinner also won a unanimous decision against a game Scott Shaffer. And Nathan Coy knocked out Dave Courchaine with a stiff left hand in the opening bout.
