The secret is out, for the second time in as many fights, Pete “The Secret Weapon” Spratt lost to an opponent by rear naked choke. This time it was Chris Lytle in Bellville, IL for Reality Submission Fighting’s Shooto Challenge 2. Utilizing the same game plan Georges St. Pierre used just over a month ago, Lytle was looking for a takedown as early as possible but Lytle was going to have to stand with Spratt for at least a moment. In that moment, both fighters threw a flurry of kicks and punches, any of which could have ended the fight earlier but instead, Lytle went for the takedown and Spratt got the front headlock. Spratt fell to his back holding Lytle’s head., but Lytle would eventually free his head and work his way onto Spratt’s back.

Lytle got his arm under Spratt’s chin and rolled over onto his back. As Lytle extended, Spratt tried to pull Lytle’s arm, but it wasn’t enough, just 47 seconds into the fight, Pete Spratt tapped out. The fight was being billed as the “fight to see which one made it back to the UFC faster”. It’s no longer a secret, and the question has been answered with an exclamation point.

Spratt and Lytle weren’t the only A-class fighters on the card. Six more A-class fighters were matched up against one another and among them, Alex Steibling taking on Mike Rodgers. The fight went all three rounds and both fighters spent the greater part of each round maneuvering one another into corners. Leaning on each other and exhausted, they tried to finish each other with straight punches and hooks, and though nobody went down, Steibling easily got the unanimous decision victory.

Next up was Sam Morgan and Manvel Gamburyan.

Morgan was going for his 8th win in a row with his last fight a quick armbar victory against UFC veteran Aaron Riley. Gokor Chivichyan trained Manvel Gamburyan, was escorted to the ring by original main eventer and UFC veteran Karo Parisyan. Gamburyan was the hot gossip before the fights started and predictions were he’d sub Morgan quickly. It didn’t quite work out that way however.

Gamburyan was able to take Morgan down, but every time he worked for a sub, Morgan would slink his way out. Instead Gamburyan used his strength to ground and pound Morgan for much of the fight. Just when Gamburyan seemed to have the fight well in hand, Morgan landed a kick on the bridge of Gamburyan’s nose and the fight was stopped to check the cut. It wasn’t a big cut, but it bled profusely, but the fight continued, and despite Morgan’s efforts to finish off Gamburyan, the bell sounded to end the fight. The judges, justly, gave the fight unanimously to Gamburyan.

The A-class action continued with Steve Berger taking on Phil Johns. Phil Johns used his smaller frame and superior wrestling ability to stay on top of Berger and use a successful ground and pound to win a unanimous decision.

Also highlighted on this card was the first female MMA fight in the state of Illinois. Kelly Kobald of Minneapolis, MN was squaring off against Ginelle Marquez coming all the way from Olympia, WA to be a part of this event, and the ladies put on a show. Kobald dominated while they stood and threw punches as she was a little taller and had a reach advantage, but, Marques was able to take Kobald down on several occasions and dominated from side and half guard positions. The fight eventually went the distance and with what could be the beginning of a beautiful rivalry, the fight was called a draw.

Curtis Stout continued his knockout streak against fan favorite Mike Rothmeir of St. Louis. Stout scored his 4th straight knock out in just 0:22 seconds of round 1.

In heavyweight action, Travis Fulton choked out Doug Sauer in the 1st round.

Mike Green and Mo Mohler fought to a draw.

Heath Pedigo earned the submission of the night with a flying triangle against Carlson Gracie trained Ryan Maynor.

After 2 losses in his first 2 fights, Bill Hill scored his 4th straight victory with a belly to belly choke against Matt Schwinnen.

The night started with Jay Estrada winning a unanimous decision over Mike Lloyd.
