July 17, 2007 Enoch, Alberta, Canada The River Cree Resort and Casino is pleased to announce the formation of the River Cree Combative Sports Commission. The mandate of the commission will be to oversee the staging of live combat sports events as the River Cree Resort broadens its scope of headline Las Vegas style entertainment at their newly opened Events Centre. The resort will be hosting several top level fight cards sanctioned by the new commission including boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA), similar to that of the immensely popular Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Heading up the new commission will be Chairman Al MacKechnie, of Edmonton, with over 24 years experience in the combative sports, first as a promoter and event producer and most recently as an inspector, commissioner and past chairman of the Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission. "Despite being a new commission, we have some of the most experienced people on board with respect to administering MMA events and other combat sports", noted MacKechnie.
This is the first tribal commission set up in western Canada. The River Cree Resort and Casino opened last fall to rave reviews from locals and visitors alike and is located adjacent to the western boundary of Edmonton, on the tribal lands of the Enoch Cree Nation. "We want to encourage people to come out and enjoy the fight cards and then take in the whole casino experience, the great food, night clubs, gaming and the overall excitement that makes River Cree Resort a "must see" entertainment choice", says MacKechnie.
The first event sanctioned by the commission takes place this Saturday, July 21, with Hardcore Championship Fighting, a mixed martial arts card titled "Unfinished Business". Tickets are available through ticketmaster.
