The city of Sacramento played host tonight to Tedd Williams latest installment of Gladiator Challenge, taking place in the heart of downtown Sacramento at the Memorial Coliseum, in what was the first California Sanctioned MMA event in the Capitol city. The show did not disappoint, as many well known fighters came to fight, only one fight went to the Judges score cards, and not to mention a sold-out crowd of roughly 3,000 people made the show all the better.
The main event pitted up local favorite and one of the top fighters at 145lbs. Urijah Faber against a Japanese legend named Naoya Uematsu, a fighter known for his incredible leg locks. Faber started the fight looking to strike, throwing kicks and charging punches at his opponent. Uematsu seemed to want to take this fight to the ground any way he could, as he would shoot unsuccessfully and fall to his back, hoping to lure his opponent into his game. Eventually both fighters hit the ground, with Uematsu scrambling for any kind of lower limp he could find with Urijah countering. A few of the attempts were solid, but for the most part, Urijah was able to escape. The second round saw a much fresher Faber, who went back to the basics: ground and pound. Uematsu had no answer for Fabers elbows and punches from the guard, as referee Herb Dean called a stop to the fight at 3:35 of the second round, much to the dismay of Uematsu. Faber now goes to 14-1, while Uematsu falls to 14-6. James Fanshier was able to make quick work of his opponent Steve Renaud at the 2:55 mark of the first round, scoring a TKO victory off what appeared to be a body shot that irritated the rib of his opponent. Fanshier retains the Gladiator Challenge 170 lb. Title. In a fight for the vacant Middleweight title, Emmanuel Newton met wrestler Kacey Uscola in a fight that saw Newton dominate with superior standup and great slams. Uscola was able to survive for the first round, however, Newton put an end to the fight at only 50 seconds of the second round by way of TKO with punches from the mount. Emmanueal Newton is the new Gladiator Challenge Middleweight Champion. In the shortest fight of the night, once again a rematch, Jamie Jara was able to recover from a quick knock down by Dusty Arden to apply a guillotine choke at only 42 seconds of the first round. The Rooster would not tap, and as a result, was put to sleep by Jara. In yet another rematch, Bo Cantrell was easily able to avoid the takedown attempts by Rocky Batastini to retain the Heavyweight Title by way of TKO at the 4:04 mark of the first round. Cantrell is now on a 5 fight win streak and has been able to plow through his competition relatively easy. Perhaps it is time for him to take the next step in his career by taking on higher ranked fighters, as he seems to be ready for it. Cal Worsham was able to knock out his opponent Harry Avis in a rematch from their fight over two years ago by knocking Avis down at the end of the first round. Since no fighter can be saved by the bell, the fight was stopped, giving Worsham the win in what was his 3rd retirement fight. Worsham was presented a belt afterwards by promoter Ted Williams and was the first inductee to the Gladiator Challenge Hall of Fame. In other action, Chris Yee defeated Nick Germond by Rear Naked choke at 1:58 of the first round, Buckley Acosta brutally knocked out Jeremy Freitag, who attacked referee Herb Dean after he regained consciousness, at only 47 seconds of the first round, Chris David defeated Noah Schinable at 1:20 of the second round by way of TKO due to a cut, and Finally, Anthony Ruiz was able to pull out a unanimous decision victory over Dan Molina after 3 rounds. The next installment of Gladiator Challenge takes place on July 8th at Konocti Vista Casino in Clear Lake California, where undefeated fighters Aaron Jameson takes on Josh Hinkle, and We Walker takes on NCFA fighter TC Collins for the Super
