Despite the loss of Kalib Starnes
from the main event, the final bout of the evening proved to be a hard-hitting
affair as Nick Hinchliffe took the opportunity to pound out the gritty Dan
Torture Chambers - knocking him out cold in the first round to close out the
AFC with a big bang of his own.
In the early goings, Hinchliffe
closed the distance and stayed on Chambers working on takedowns and submissions
until he made his way into a modified backmount with his right leg tying up
Chambers right arm from the back, giving him little defense to an onslaught of punches to the
head that had him out cold before the referee stepped in to halt the action.
Following a disappointing
performance against fellow cardmate Dan MacIver at King of the Cage, Hinchliffe
has put together a string of two very impressive performances and appears ready
to take a step up in competition again.
The semi-main event of the evening
saw the rubber-match between the Mountain of Mayhem Chris Peak and his
old nemesis Marcus The Loud Mouthed Assassin Hicks in a grudge match ignited when they met in the ring for the first time in 2003.
This time there was no controversy
and it was Hicks who seized his opportunity to move his record to 9-16 by
scooping the fight right to the mat, fending off a guillotine choke, and
eventually finishing with a rear-naked choke in the first stanza to the take
final bout in the trilogy.
The fight of the night belonged to
the lightweights Gavin Neil and Curtis Demarce who waged war in a battle of
attrition over three five-minute rounds. Neils well-rounded MMA game alongside
superior conditioning tilted the bout in his favor as he took the Unanimous and
entertaining decision from a gritty Demarce.
Dan MacIver stopped Parksvilles
Duncan Wilson in the first round with ground-and-pound against the cage midway
through the first stanza in a bout that ended with some controversy.
Wilson was able to fend off the
takedown in the early goings but MacIver eventually worked the bout to the mat
where he went to work from the half-guard against the cage, hitting Wilson with
hard shots to the face until the referee John Alessio stepped in to stop the
fight.
While the stoppage appeared to be a
little on the early side, it was Victorias first taste of MMA, and as expected
fights were going to be stopped a few punches early, rather than a few punches
late.
Shaun Albrecht continued to roll
with a workmanlike effort against Lethbridges Tim Tamaki. Albrecht was able to
dictate the action for most of the fight before finishing with ground-and-pound
on the mat in the second stanza.
Derek Medlers 0-0 record was
deceiving, as he looked like a veteran of 10 fights with his calm demeanor and
superior octagon control against a gritty but overmatched Brandon MacArthur.
Despite MacArthur having seven
professional bouts to Medlers zero, it was Medler who looked like the more
relaxed competitor as the Island MMA trained fighter stayed away from the quick
hands of his opponent, and fired back with a mixed bag of leg kicks and right
hands.
After a clinch against the cage
Medler muscled the fight to the ground and went to work with ground-and-pound
that MacArthur simply had no answer for. Medler tied up the right arm of his
opponent in a Matt Hughes-esque crucifix position, pounded his opponent with
left hands, and eventually finished from the back with punches to the side of
the head until the referee stepped in to halt the action.

Zumas Nick Driedger was impressive
in his bout with Tim Jeffreys overwhelming his opponent from start to finish
with combinations on the feet that had Jeffreys back peddling and on the
defensive from the ring of the bell.
Driedger would not let up on the
gas, eventually landing numerous solid punches and dropping Jeffreys to the
ground, a follow-up with some ground-and-pound signaled the end and the bout
was stopped by the referee shortly after.

Local fighter Tyler Lynk and Matt
Bagshaw competed in an entertaining back-and-forth battle that saw both
competitors have opportunities to finish the fight. Bagshaw started out quickly
with a nice takedown and went right to work with some ground and pound, but
Lynk proved to be crafty getting back to his feet and securing a nice takedown
of his own to turn the tide into his favor.
After a restart to check a cut on
Lynks head, the fight made its way back to the feet where Bagshaw landed a
solid knee to the face with Lynk responding with a punch that rocked the
wrestler and had him back peddling into the cage.
Lynk dove in to finish the fight
but Bagshaw came over the top with a huge overhand right that flattened Lynk
out cold, giving him a finish reminiscent of Scott Smith vs.
Pete Sell.
Iury Aquino, a fighter known
primarily for his stand-up was absolutely dominant against Arran McLellan, but
surprisingly did so primarily on the ground.
Following a flurry of punches that
pushed his opponent up against the fence, Aquino took the fight to the ground
and dominated position from side control, grinding his opponent down with
elbows and punches before finally knocking him out late in the first round.
Connor Reddell was impressive
slamming his opponent Dustin Dickeson to the mat and finishing with an armbar
in the first round.
Jonathon Kirk defeated Ryan
Gustafson using his superior stand up to control the action on the feet, and
working his takedown defense to keep it there.
Gustafson had trouble setting up
his takedowns and it would prove to cost him as he took damage every time he
engaged until the end came in the second when Kirk bullied him on the mat and
forced the referee John Alessio to step in and halt the action after he took a
number of unanswered punches to the face.
The Beefstorm Josh Spong, who
moonlights as a student at the West Coast College of Massage Therapy proved to
be every bit as advertised overwhelming his opponent Jason Weare to finish in
the second stanza.
Dominating the stand-up and keeping
the fight on the feet when it mattered most, Spong who hails from the Final
Round Gym in Duncan swarmed his opponent with punches against the cage in the
second finished his opponent and kicking off the night of fights with a bang.
With the AFCs first foray into MMA
in the books, the promoters are targeting a date later in the year for AFC 2 back in B.C.'s capital. |
