Antonio Silva

The parade to the penalty box continues for mixed martial arts fighters as two more were suspended and fined by the California State Athletic Commission for the use of banned substances, and one more for skipping a test altogether. Antonio “Big Foot” Silva, and UFC veteran Edwin Dewees have been suspended for positive tests. In addition William “Yobie” Jacobsen has been suspended for not taking a scheduled test at all.

Current EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio Silva was suspended for one year, retroactive to his July 26 bout against Justin Eilers in EliteXC, for the use of Boldenone. This is a big hit to Silva, and EliteXC, considering he is the heavyweight champion and has been one of the fighters heavily pushed by the organization. The suspension is reminiscent of Tim Sylvia’s positive test when he won the UFC heavyweight championship, Sylvia was stripped of the belt, and it should be interesting to see if EliteXC follows suit. Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett also went through a similar process, eventually losing his belt for the positive result as well. Silva  was fined $2,500.00, but it is unclear whether the outcome of the fight will be changed to a no contest, which has been a hot topic of late considering the glut of fighters that have been nabbed for drug infraction.

Ultimate Fighter 4 veteran Edwin Dewees - who moved up a weight class to light heavyweight in a losing effort against Rogerio Nogueira on July 19 – has also been suspended for a whole year. Dewees has been on a major slide of late, losing five of his last six bouts, he tested positive for Nandrolone and was finalized at 499 ng/ml. He has also been fined $2,500.00 dollars for the infraction.

In other news William “Yobie” Jacobsen who competed on August 15 in Elite XC in Friant, did not take his scheduled drugs of abuse test and has been suspended indefinitely by the CSAC.
