Emelianenko Fedor over Tim Sylvia
It would be a great honor to meet Randy [Couture] in the ring one day. I have a great amount of respect for him. Those were the words of newly crowned WAMMA champion Emelianenko Fedor, and if his 36 second destruction of Tim Sylvia didnt set up the match that everyone has been waiting for then I dont know what will.
It took less than a minute for Emelianenko to dismantle the former UFC heavyweight champion and when the dust had settled he had knocked Sylvia to the mat with a combination of punches, and submitted him with a rear naked choke. All in a days work. Despite his impressive performance, the man many feel is the number one fighter in the world was humble saying through a transator honestly I dont think about where people consider me, and what rankings I am at. If that is true than he is in select company because many MMA fans think about it all the time and put him at the top of the heap of all weight classes.
If Affliction is somehow able to make a fight with Couture vs. Emelianenko bout happen it could be one of the biggest fights in MMA and put Affliction or any other promotion that could promote it on the map. The UFC legal team will be sure to take every measure to insure that Couture never fights outside the UFC, but imagine if they were able to get both to come into the UFC fold? That may just be a pipe dream, but Emelianenko's win opens up a host of possibilities for the talented Russian who is widely regarded as the worlds best heavyweight.
Andrei Arlvoski over Ben Rothwell
Andrei Arlovski looked like the best Pitbull we have seen in a long time as he tore Ben Rothwell apart in what was the best fight of the night, taking the entertaining bout at 1:13 of the third round. A right hand over the top and a right uppercut sealed the deal for Arlovski who threw everything but the kitchen sink at Rothwell, who just wouldnt go away despite taking an abnormal amount of punishment.
Rothwell showed a major league heart taking a volley of shots in the second and third rounds that effectively sealed the deal for the former UFC heavyweight champion who got his punches off first and never let Rothwell generate any offense on the feet. The IFL heavyweight champions best opportunity came when Arlovski dropped back for a footlock, leaving the door open for Rothwell to get on top and land a handful of solid elbows. It was not enough however, as the superior foot speed and athleticism of Arlovski proved to be difference in a bout that saw the UFC defector look like the aggresive Arlovski of old.
Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo
Josh Barnett sent a left hand careening of the chin of Pedro Rizzo that sent his foe to the mat in an unconscious heap before he hit the ground. It was a bout that looked remarkably similar to their first tango - only this time with the opposite result - as Barnett evened the series and opened the door to a rubber match down the road.
The first round looked like a slightly more tentative version of their first fight but with Barnett unsuccessfully driving in for the takedown every so often with neither fighter finding their rythem and landing any telling blows. The second round was the decisive one as Josh Barnett was able to erase the sting of his loss to Pedro Rizzo finishing him by following a right hand that missed with a big left that landed flush and turned off Rizzo's switch. He was out before he hit the mat.
Shortly after the bout Barnett was asked who he wanted to fight next and he was his typical cocky self saying anyone who is dumb enough to sign on that dotted line. It will be interesting to see who he matches up with next, as Arlovski, and Fedor both won their bouts. With Rothwell and Sylvia losing. Almost any of those combonations could make for an interesting bout with Fedor potentially unavailable if he gets his wish to fight Couture.
Renato Babalu Sobral over Mike Whitehead
In a boring 3 round bout fight Renato Babalu Sobral defeated Mike Whitehead via unanimous decision with three scores of 30-27. Neither fighter was able to mount any significant offense in the contest and while Sobral did enough to win, they appeared to almost nullify each other making for a fight where they shut each other down to the point of inactivity. Sobral was the victor in the end and hopefully he will be matched up with someone like Nogueria in his next bout which will hopefully be a more entertaining affair than this was.
Matt Lindland over Fabio Negao
Matt Lindland was able to defeat Fabio Negao with a hard fought, but
less than impressive performance by the highly regarded former UFC #1
contender. Lindland knocked Negao down with a left straight in the
opening moments of the fight and jumped for the guillotine submission
over the jiu jitsu practitioner when Nagao went for the takedown. Nagao
eventually escaped Lindlands best opportunity to finish the fight and
from there it was downhill as the fight deteriorated into a
sloppy boxing where both fighters looked every bit the
wrestler and jiu jitsu practitioner.
Aside from the guillotine attempt, Lindland found his best success working the ground and pound from the guard but didnt spend enough time there to close out the
fight. As the fight spilled into the second and third rounds both
fighters appeared noticeably fatigued and as time went on fatigue
translated into sloppyness.
In the end Lindlands control from the top and takedowns may have been
the difference in a fight where neither fighter
looked unpolished. You have to wonder if the long layoff for
Lindland played a role in his performance, as the new politician looked
every bit the part in a ring he once dominated.
Mike Pyle over JJ Ambrose
I knew it was just a matter of time till he sunk in quicksand, Mike Pyle said after his bout and the Randy Couture trained fighter lived up to his name overwhelming his opponent and suffocating him with a rear naked choke to secure a dominant victory over JJ Ambrose.
Pyle started things off getting the fight to the mat with an upper body takedown, and eventually transitioned to the back and finishing the fight before Ambrose could even get comfortable. Ambrose looked like he was sinking in quicksand throughout the bout and eventually succumbed to the experience of the unpredictable Pyle who said afterwards, I did not take it lightly, I have made that mistake in the past and I will never make it again. Pyle appears ready to take the next level in competition and it might be interesting who Affliction matches him up against next.
Rogeiro Nogueira over Edwin Dewees
As expected, Edwin Dewees was overwhelmed by Rogerio Nogueira who controlled the bout after a short feeling out period, closing the fight with punches after wearing him down to the body with knees. The twin brother of the UFC heavyweight champion dropped Dewees to the mat with a stiff left hand and pounced on his opponent landing a handful of extra punches to the face before referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight. His stand up success didnt surprise the jiu jitsu ace who told interviewer Frank Trigg after the fight I been training boxing for 5 years. It showed in this fight as he used his hands to good effect, mixing it in with knees to finish off his overmatched opponent in the first round.
