The King of the Cage, a California based fight organization, made its way into south eastern Indiana last weekend to the Belterra Casino. With a solid 11 fight card, headlined by Travis Fulton and Shonie Carter, the King of the Cage looked to establish itself as a MMA leader in the Midwest region as well. Having just had a show in Dayton in late October the KOTC show looked to provide the lights, sound, and ring girls that have made the promotion so famous in the west. The show had an interesting mix of young guns and wily veterans, looking to prove that they belong in the Octagon. The fights went as follows..

With a solid 11 fight card, headlined by Travis Fulton and Shonie Carter, the King of the Cage looked to establish itself as a MMA leader in the Midwest region as well. Having just had a show in Dayton in late October the KOTC show looked to provide the lights, sound, and ring girls that have made the promotion so famous in the west. The show had an interesting mix of young guns and wily veterans, looking to prove that they belong in the Octagon. The fights went as follows.. Josh Souder vs. Scott Hope 1 st fight- Young gun Josh Souder, fighting out of Ground Zero and Team Jorge Grugel, looked to keep his winning ways going against another tough fighter in Scott Hope out of the 4- Seasons gym in London , OH . . Although Souder attempted submission after submission early, Hope had all of the answers and powered his way out of each, delivering blows along the way. At one point, Souder went for an armbar, and Hope literally picked up Souder and dropped him on his head twice. Although, Souder put up a great fight, Hope seemed to have all of the answers, at all the right times, and pulled out a unanimous decision victory. Jesse Chilton vs. Rory Perazak 2 nd fight- Jesse Chilton and Rory Perazak squared off in the Octagon in the second fight of the night. Chilton landed a solid right hand at the opening bell and a stunned Perazak fell to the floor. In the heat of the moment, Chilton landed an illegal knee to the downed Perazak and referee Herb Dean had to momentarily stop the fight. Unfortunately, Perazak was able to continue and within a few minutes, Chilton was almost able to sink in a rear naked choke and an armbar. Unable to get the submission, Chilton blasted away and forced the referee to stop the fight in midway through round 1. Nick Ollbending vs. Doug Sours 3 rd fight- Cincinnati product Nick Hulk Ollbending made his long awaited debut in the Octagon taking on seasoned veteran Doug Sours in the 3 rd fight. The fight did not last long as Ollbending was able to slam Sours to the ground and began to land his jackhammer shots. Sours was unable to defend and Ollbending went to side mount and kept up his pressure. Sours, unable to get up, turned his back to avoid any further punishment. After watching four to five shots go undefended, referee Herb Dean had to stop the fight in round 1 and declared Ollbending the winner. A very impressive debut victory for the Jorge Grugel product, who looks to make a splash in future shows. Mike Boyd vs. Jason Bryant 4 th fight- Cleveland product Mike Boyd, who was making his MMA debut, took on Louisville Fight Team member Jason Bryant in a very evenly matched fight. Both fighters had their chances in the fight, with Boyd getting the better of the two with two or three solid takedowns in the fight. At one point, Bryant almost sunk in a guillotine choke, but Boyd defended well and escaped. An unintentional low blow cost Boyd a point, but it was not enough for Bryant as Boyd was able to pull out the narrow majority decision victory. Andre Garcia vs. Darrell Smith 5 th fight- Andre Garcia, traveling from Michigan , took on Tennessee fighter Darrell The Bulldog Smith in the 5 th fight of the evening. In the opening seconds, Smith landed a solid right hand immediately knocking down Garcia. Smith took full advantage taking Garcias back and working for the choke. Garcia defended well, but was unable to escape the lock and after multiple attempts and consistent pounding, Smith finally found his opportunity and locked in a rear naked choke and forced Garcia to tap early in round 1. Dan Swift vs. Jeremy Bolt
6 th fight- Wily veteran Dan Swift took on Jeremy Bolt in a very evenly matched bout. Bolt pressed the action early taking Swift down on multiple occasions, but was unable to mount any real damaging attack. Swift, always looking for a submission, almost locked in a kimura, but Bolt was able to roll out of it and escape danger. Midway into round 2, Swift began to take control of the fight, pressing the action and taking down Bolt on numerous occasions. After a quick trade in the Octagon, Bolt went for the take down, but Swift saw his opportunity and locked in a tight guillotine choke. After a few seconds of no movement, referee Dean immediately stopped the fight with Bolt completely unconscious. Jeff Cox vs. Shawn Huffman 7 th fight- Undefeated Cleveland product Jeff Cox took on Tennessee fighter Shawn Huffman in the 7 th fight of the night. Both fighters looked to control the other on the ground as Huffman got the initial takedown, but Cox was able to reverse. Both fighters jockeyed for position, with Cox attempting a front choke, which Huffman was barely able to escape. In round 2, Cox was able to control the fight with solid takedowns and attempted to finish the fight, just when Huffman was able to escape a rear naked choke attempt, Cox was able to reverse and gain back position. With his uncanny ability to reverse and always control his opponent, Cox easily pulled out the unanimous decision victory over a very game Huffman. Gary Meyers vs. Allen Weickert 8 th fight- In a heavyweight showdown, Gary Meyers took on Allen Weickert in a fight that looked like it would not make it to the distance. Meyers, who looked like a raging bull ready to charge, looked determined when the opening bell rang. As expected, Meyers bull rushed Weickert into the fence, looking to land some solid shots, but instead of landing the shots, he ate a huge right hand from Weickert which knocked him to the floor. Weickert tried to take advantage of the downed fighter but was stood up due to inactivity. After getting another takedown, Weickert ended the fight by landing some huge punches from the top to where Myers had no other option but to tap. Forrest Petz vs. Ro Brower 9 th fight- KO artist Forrest Petz, fighting out of Cleveland, took on South Carolina fighter Ro Brower in a entertaining stand up war. Both fighters had quick hands and landed strikes early and often on each other. Knowing that one punch could end the fight, Petz landed a huge right land completely knocking out Brower midway through round 1. Petz was victorious and added another KO to his very impressive record. Travis Fulton vs. Don Richard 10 th fight- The semi main event of the evening pitted Travis Ironman Fulton against Flint , MI fighter Don Richard. Richard got the early advantage by taking down the surprised Fulton and rammed him up against the fence. From there, he began to rain down punches with Fulton defending well. Fulton worked for an armbar and various submissions, but Richard was prepared and worked his way out of each. With over 100 fights to his credit, Fulton remained calm and slowly worked his way out and took the side mount on Richards. Fulton worked his ground and pound, landing some solid shots to the head and body of Richard. The round came to an end and unfortunately, Richard was unable to continue and Fulton was declared the victor. Shonie Carter vs. Buddy Clinton 11 th fight- The main event of the evening pitted Mr. International himself Shonie Carter against Royce Gracie Black belt Buddy Golden boy Clinton . Round 1 had Carter sweeping the legs of the jiu-jitsu black belt, taking him to the floor. After working his way to the side mount, Clinton locked in an omaplata, holding Carters left arm hostage. Carter remained clam and slowly worked his way out and stood back up. After trading a few leg kicks, Carter was again able to take down Clinton as round 1 came to an end. Round 2 began with Carter again slamming Clinton to the floor. Unable to mount any significant attack, referee Dean stood back up the fighters where both fighters played it cautious and traded strikes from a distance. Carter and Clinton both worked the clinch well throughout the fight, but midway through the round, Clinton landed a low knee to the oversized cup of Carter. After taking a few minutes to recoup, the fighters traded a few strikes in the middle of the Octagon as the round came to an end. With a commanding performance, Carter was the leader on all three judges scorecards and was handed the unanimous judges decision victory. Questions or Comments?
