# 1: Weve discussed grip strength training in a previous column, and I thought it would be beneficial to show a few photos of some of the various grip exercises being performed. Just forget the part about me being an old man, and GO WORK OUT! Heres the FARMERS WALK. Basically, you pick up a heavy weight and go for a walk. Shown is 150lbs per hand. With the heavier weights, picking them up to get started is half the fun! # 2:This is the Gripanator from PDA. Its available from www.fractionalplates.com. This device allows infinitely adjustable resistance with a range of motion similar to a spring gripper. There is also a "negative assist arm" (smaller bar just above my forearm) which props the weight at the top to allow you to release the catch and perform the "lowering" of the weight with higher resistance than you could handle for the whole movement. The reach (distance between handles) is fully adjustable also. The leverage ratio is 4.3 : 1, so pictured is 107.5lb, slightly higher than an Ironmind COC Trainer. # 3: This is the Ironmind Titans Telegraph Key. Its available from www.ironmind.com. This device works your pinch grip by allowing you to squeeze two flat plates together with your fingertips. The leverage created by this device is SERIOUS. Shown is 25lb, and this is near the edge for me. Remember, finger tendons dont develop as quickly as muscle, so go slow and be careful with fingertip work! You can use this device with your thumb on top, or (as shown) on the bottom plate. # 4: This is the block weight pinch grip exercise. Shown is 30lb, half of a 60lb dumbbell. The width of the block, as well as its weight, contribute to the difficulty of this exercise. You can lift it as shown, using only fingertips to hold the weight. You can also toss it from hand to hand, catching it in the manner of an eagle using its talons. Remember to keep your palm down, so that the fingers carry the load! Just cut the handle out of a solid dumbbell, and you have two block weights! This section of the column will become an archive of photos which demonstrate various exercises we discuss here.
