It has been too long in between columns but the Canadian Corner is finally back. It has been many moons since the last edition of the Canadian corner due in large part to the new incarnation of our website MMA Ring Report and some new additions to the site we have in the works. In this edition of the Canadian Corner we have news on all things Canadian MMA including the province by province break down of MMA events and happenings that will take place till the end of the year 2005, the possible return of one of Canadas premier trainers to the ring, and much more. Without furthur ado... Quebec TKO news and notes TKO has taken some measures to try to unite MMA rules and from this point forward, all future title fights will now be 5 x 5 round fights, just like that of the UFC. TKO president Stephane Patry tells us it is "Cause we had a couple of championships recently that after the 3rd round it was very close. We believe the extra 2 rounds would have made it more a decisive outcome. I feel that we should all use the same rules if we want the sport to gain legitimacy. Dana white and the UFC did a great job with the commissions and it is up to all the other organizations to follow their lead." In addition to the change in round system, knees to the head are no longer allowed to a down opponent, this rule however has been in place for several events now. TKO has also signed with the Fight Network says Stephane Patry, "I am very happy, if every fan of MMA supports the sports and requests their cable provider to get the fight network it is going to do a lot for the sport. The maximum exposure the sport gets the better it is." It looks like TKO will have a busy fall as they have 3 shows tentatively scheduled for the last 4 months of 2005. The schedule is still up in the air at this point but the plan for TKO president Stephane Patry is as follows, but is subject to change. TKO 22: Sept 30th Montreal Quebec at the Pierre Charbanneau centre. Tentative card is as follows. Main Event Jason St. Louis vs. Steve Vigneault 170lbs Vigneaults MMA debut at 170 pounds. Semi Main Events Ryan Diaz vs. Mark Hominick 145 lbs title fight Jonathan Goulet vs. Shonie Carter Main Card Marvin Eastman vs. Yan Pellerin Spencer Fisher vs. Fabio Holanda Chris Horodecki vs. Stephane Laliberte Tyler Jackson vs. Samuel Guillet Krystof Midoux vs. Kryzstof Soszinski Thierry Quenneville vs. TBA Undercard James Haourt vs. Sylvain Cloutier Mike Turner vs. Dave Parizeau TKO 23: October 15th in Quebec City TKO 24: November 26th in Victoriaville Apex 2 Apex will return after a year layoff and will welcome fans to a different more intimate venue this time around. They will be going to the Medley which also holds the UGC events and seats approximately 900-1000 people. The show was originally scheduled to have a main event consisting of Ivan Menjivar vs. Antonio Carvalho but Carvalho suffered an injury in his last fight and had to drop out. He will however be replaced by the versatile Joe Lauzon. In addition to the Apex show, Alex Capporicci who also runs the In Demand Fight team tells us that aside from having Brent Beauparlant and Claude Patrick on the APEX Show, In Demand fight team member Steve Berger is fighting August 13th at Combat Do, and Mike Rogers should be making his return to the ring after a year off from breaking his jaw in the last APEX. Rory Singer just won in The Fight Party and should be back in Atlanta in August and Dustin Severs might fight in APEX in September but nothing is confirmed just yet. On a sad note, Arizona fighter Santino DeFranco was dealt a hard blow when he was accepted onto The Ultimate Fighter 2, but when he did his MRI, they found he has two brain aneurysms, and unfortunately that basically spells the end of his MMA career. Capporicci tells us Hes a tough kid and really smart, so Im sure hell be fine. The next Apex card will be on September 3rd in Montreal Quebec and will feature a main event of Joe Lauzon taking on local firecracker Ivan Menjivar. The full card is as follows, card subject to change. Main Event Ivan Menjivar Vs. Joe Lauzon Kickboxing: Stephan Thompson Vs. Freddie Espiricueta Serge Lafonde Vs. Wojtek Kaszowski Fritz Paul Vs. TBA Steve Berger Vs. Nuri Shakir Brent Beauparlant Vs. Jason Guida Claude Patrick Vs. Mandela Kponou Martin Grandmont Vs. Eric Lacelle Eric Beaulieu Vs. Rowan Cunningham Francois Flibotte Vs. Sean Ragnitz Sebastien Poirier Vs. Nabil Khatib Mike Hong vs. TBA Freedom Fight 2005 MMARR spoke with one of the men behind the promotion Freedom fight, Pete Rodley and he told us that the next Freedom fight is expected to be in Canada again, possibly November but at this point nothing is set in stone. He is also telling us that the Freedom Fight 1 DVD is also in the works, at this point there is no date, but he is hoping to have it ready for the Next Freedom Fight event. British Columbia Gibson Pankration: The Return of Fearless? MMARR learned that Tyler Jackson suffered from a more serious form of Cauliflower ear that forced him out of his fight in Superbrawl. The problem was on the inside of the ear and if left untreated, could burst and cost him his hearing so he had surgery and his estimated time of recovery is unknown but MMARR wishes him a full and speedy recovery. Ryan Diaz went on to win his short notice fight against a much larger opponent by submission. Todd Gouwenberg is no longer a member of Team Gibson but Mr. Gibson told us, we wish him the best in the future with his own Team and Gym. The reason for the split is not immediately known. In other big news MMARR learned that it is possible we have not seen the last of Lance Gibsons fighting days. He is busy these days but it appears that he may step back into the ring at least one more time. His opponent or the organization at time of press was unknown. WFF 9 "Wild West" WFF has been moved from Sept 10th to September 17th due to a conflict with the NFC which will be having a show the week before. The WFF Card will see Chuck Liddell come to the west to do a seminar on top of working the corner of his fighter Antonio Banuelos who will headline the card. President Jason Towns also tells us that he would like to see future WFF events on Kelowna soil and is looking into sanctioning MMA in Kelowna so he can have shows there as soon as possible. The rumored card for WFF 9 is tentatively as follows, card subject to change. Max Marin vs. Antonio Banuelos Sal Ram vs. Gene Laszlo Jas Mahli vs. Darren Taitenger Trevor Schmidt vs. "Caine" Shawn Kapos vs. Danny Valimaki George Kassimatis vs. Adam Thomas Chad Freeman vs. Eric Rassmussen Jay Jenkins vs. Jerry Elliot Tim Jensen vs. Kenny Butterfield Bill Mahood vs. Todd Seyler Ullysses Castro vs. Brian Stromberg Bill Mahoods XFC Bill Mahood will be bringing his own brand of Prince George MMA to the Prince George Multiplex on October 15th. They are already deep into the assembly of the card and we will see 2 time UFC veteran Gideon Ray making his way to Canada to fight and will be joined by none other then UFC legend Keith Hackney! Some other interesting fights are in the works and we will also see the return of another UFC veteran and Prince George Native Bill The Butcher Mahood. His opponent is unknown at this point, but with Bill Mahood fighting in Prince George expect rambunctious crowd. The card is below, card subject to change. XFC 4 - October 15th Kajan Johnson vs. Pain Peters Gideon Ray vs. Chris Fontaine Richard Nancoo vs. Mustafa Hussaini Jason St. Louis vs. Jesse Bongsfeldt Chris Peak vs. Jason Day Ben Greer vs. Paul Forde Bastien Huveneers vs. Seven Quesnelle Jason Zazalenchuk vs. Victor Daycheif Chris Ade vs. Dave Sholten Matt Leo vs. Justin Tavernini Kevin Barkhouse vs. Tim Tamaki Mike Neufied vs. Tim Thursten Travis Pang vs. John Cooper Kenny Butterfield vs. TBA Tim Jensen vs. TBA Bill Mahood vs. TBA Evolution MMA Munduruca Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Joe Doerksen is no longer the head instructor at Evolution, from this point he will be concentrating on becoming a full time MMA fighter and trainer. He told MMARR The reason I am leaving Evolution is quite simple. I am going to focus on being a fighter for now, and hopefully get back to teaching after my fight career slows down, or stops. I have gained many new friends here in BC, and a lot of valuable experience. I would like to come back here at some point, but dont know exactly when, or for how long that would be. Right now, I am just trying to focus on being a fighter. He is also considering the possibility of starting a club in Winnipeg, because it is where I am from, and it is full of talented athletes. So we may see Doerksen form an MMA club of his own in his native town of Winnipeg Canada someday down the road. At time of press, a replacement for Doerksen as head instructor of Evolution was unknown, it appears that Matt Leo will be taking on the duties of teaching the classes until a full time instructor can be found. Alberta MFC 8 Ressurection The MFC will return to Edmonton for the first times since their last show over two years ago and this time MFC president Mark Pavelich promises he isnt going anywhere. This will be a co-promotion between both Stephane Patry and Mark Pavelich and we could see top TKO talent fighting in the west for the first time ever! Mark Pavelich told MMARR I feel vindicated, because so many people turned on me, and now so many people turned themselves back onto me. MFC 8 will take place on September 9th at the Shaw conference centre. Card is subject to change. MFC 8 Ressurection Dan Severn vs. Jim Dobson Jason MacDonald vs. Chris Fontaine Victor Valimaki vs. Darren Apels Chris Ade vs. Kyle Cheyne Kevin Dolan vs. Kevin Leclair Blake Fredrickson vs. Kevin Manderson Travis Galbraith vs. Chris Wilson Mike Bell vs. Shane Wilson Yoosuf Penney vs. Geoff Herdman Tarrouf Salloum vs. Nick Perry Will Betz vs. Paul Forde Victor Daychief vs. Billy Bukert Jordan McKay vs. Graydon Tannis Shane Biever vs. TBA King of the Cage Canada It is rumored that King of the Cage will be making their return to Canada with 3 shows before the end of the year. MMARR was unable to contact KOTC to confirm these dates at this time. Sept 24th Calgary Stampede Corral Oct 1st Edmonton Agricom Dec 3rd Calgary Stampede Corral Manitoba UCW 3 The next UCW will be on October 22nd and Mr. Soszynski tells us that he is hoping for his biggest show yet. He has even planned his next two shows after that with UCW 4 on May 9th the day before Mothers day, and UCW 5 on October 27th. Aside from Krzystof Soszynski the matchmaker and event organizer, there is also Soszynski the fighter and he went to Las Vegas for the second K-1 Amercian tryouts on August 12 and 13th. He was there to try out for the MMA portion of the event and tells us that despite having his last two fights at 205 his immediate future lies in heavyweight where he will ply his trade for at least the rest of 2005. He says he had to cut 28 pounds in 24 hours in preparation for his fight with Matt Horwitch in Freedom Fight and while he makes no excuses, he says it cost him strength and endurance in his bout. He may even be fighting on the card again for the 3rd time in a row but says, If I have to fight, I will but, I would prefer not to referring to the stress and difficulty of fighting and working on an event simultaneously. Team Munduruca It is true that Krzystof Soszynski is no longer with Team Munduruca, but he is still hoping to have 8-9 Munduruca fighters fighting on his upcoming UCW card. The reason for the split is unknown at this time and after talking with both Munduruca and Soszynski showed class and both agreed they they needed to sort the issues between each other and not through the press or internet. Rodrigo Munduruca recently also spent some time in Brazil with family. He tells us We have tons of fights schedule for the fall and so on...Myself, Jeff Sutherland and Kevin Manderson should be fighting September 9th at MFC 8 and afterwards a bunch of guys should be fighting at KOTC in October. I have other events that Im working on with some guys and even an opportunity for a fight here in Brazil at the end of the year for one of my top guys. Ontario Team Tompkins It is official, Canada has its second representative on the Ultimate Fighter T.V show and this time around it will be heavyweight Rob Maximus MacDonald. There is little doubt that he will represent the Canadians well regardless of how he finishes and despite the fact he only has a record of 3-0 the former RCMP officer is expected to be a contender for the coveted 3 year 6 figure contract. Look for in depth interviews with both Shawn Tompkins as well as Rob MacDonald as the T.V show progresses. Team Tompkins has picked up another top prospect in Krzystof Soszynski. The matchmaker of the UCW is now managed by Shawn Tompkins of Team Tompkins fame and hopes to spend significant time at their training centre working on his stand up. Odds & Ends David Loiseau at UFC 55 With St. Pierres dominating performance at UFC 54, his teammate will be next in line on the big stage and on October 7st, David Loiseau will take on Evan Tanner at UFC 55. In a middleweight showdown that could see Loiseau get a title shot if he wins, or see Tanner get back into the middleweight picture after a loss to Franklin. Make no mistake, Loiseau will be fighting in the biggest fight of his career and will be taking on his toughest challenge to date in the ultra experienced Evan Tanner.
