Shortly after UFC 54: Boiling Point, Matt Lindland was surprisingly released from his contract with the UFC even though he was considered the #1 middleweight contender. Lindland was coming off a victory over Joe Doerkson that only further cemented his status as the heir apparent to Rich Franklins title. However, during the weigh-ins he wore a shirt advertising an online sports book that the UFC deemed as breaching his contract because of their sponsorship terms. Was the UFC looking for a technicality that would prevent Lindland from facing their new middleweight poster boy?

Sherdog.com is reporting that UFC president Dana White has confirmed a third showdown between rivals Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, which is tentatively scheduled for October as the main event on an upcoming Spike TV fight night. There was some suspicion that the UFC was contemplating such a move because of the controversy that plagued the rematch in July that Shamrock lost via TKO, but protested it was a premature stoppage by referee Herb Dean.

In Turn Wombat, Jeff Meszaros has provided a reply to Mr. Charles Wilson who wrote a response to Mr. Meszaros's column Wombat's World 1. Here is the reply Hey Charles, Thanks for the letter. When I heard that a kung fu guy was writing a reply to my article, I expected to see a raving rant about chi and the dim-mak. Thankfully, your reply was well written and eloquent. Unfortunately, however, you misunderstood the point I was making...

Every now and then you meet someone who is all about traditional martial arts and looks down their nose at mixed martial arts like its the mangy neighborhood dog that keeps pooping on their finely groomed lawn. There is, of course, only one proper way to deal with such people. Namely; tackle them to the ground and choke them til they pass out and wet their pants.

From the standpoint of making the divisions as deep as possible the UFC let the 155 pound division go and instead decided to concentrate on the other 4 divisions. August 21st, 2004 was the last lightweight 155lb contest in the UFC and featured Josh The Punk Thomson losing to uncrowned UFC 155lb champion Yves Edwards. Since that fight took place over a year ago, the question is, have we actually seen a more concentrated deeper UFC in their remaining 4 divisions? The question here is not whether the lightweight class is the most exciting or if the lightweight fighters deserved better, that is another article all together. The question we will look at here is, what effect if any, did dropping the 155 lbs weight class have on the remaining 4 active UFC divisions?
